    Dev Diary Age of Defenders

for more than 3 years, our team has been working on Age of Defenders - unique combination of tower defense game with RTS. players will have to defend their base and at the same time attack their opponent, mixed gameplay of games like Kingdom Rush and Starcraft you could say.

the game will have old-school 2D Red Alert-ish graphics, offer both singleplayer and multiplayer, beautiful cinematics in between the missions, and it will be cross-platform (for iPad, Android tablets and on the web). it´s all made in Flash, using Adobe Air for porting to tablets.

started as indie studio of 4 college students, we had no idea of the size we were aiming for :) we have walked a long way, gone through many ups and downs, and are now just few weeks (hopefully) before the final release of the game.

in my posts I´d like to share with the community about the interesting stuff we have encountered during the development process. and introduce you the game, of course :)

    enjoy

I am a huge TD fan and welcome any inovative additions to the gerana ---- feild runners, gorg, kingdom rush, and anomaly are the TD games that top my list. Each of the latter are all traditional TD games at the foundation but yet hold unique qualities that set them apart from one another and make them all great in their own way. I truly hope that your game will become a member of my "top" list. Would it be possible for you to describe how Age of Defenders will fit in among the top TD games and how it's gameplay compares to the games I mentioned at the top of my post?

In any event -- I wish you the best of success and I look forward to seeing your game hit the app, store in a few weeks...

except that we work hard on the audio, visuals and overall atmosphere, the gameplay is what we value the most :) comparing to the games you are mentioning, there are going to be two major differences:

    1. all of those games are traditional tower defense games (or tower offense in case of Anomaly). In AoD you are going to defend AND attack simultaneously. you are going to build defense so that your enemy does not hit your base, and at the same time you will have to build your army and try to reach opponent´s base.

    2. there will be no predefined path, you will be able to set the way your units will go, wave after wave. so both players will be looking for the weakest spot in the opponent´s defense and try to send the units there.

all synchronous realtime crossplatform. so it will be interesting to see web users competing against tablets.

btw we are already testing the web version (which we will port for tablets later on), you can play the game at http://www.geewa.com/age-of-defenders. it includes singleplayer, multiplayer vs AI and vs other players, so go ahead, try it and let me know :)

    Hi,

    I have some questions please.

    1. Price point?
    2. ETA for the game?
    3. How long is the campaign?
    4. Can I assume this is heavy retina ready? :D Juicy graphics!

it will be freemium, but it definitely will NOT be a pay-to-win thing or an app trying to rip your for hundreds of dollars. let me explain :)

AoD will feature energy = ingame virtual currency. Energy is produced by Generator and stored in Storage. You spend the energy by going into a battle. All the newcomers will have basic (lvl1) storage and generator (see the far right structure on the pic below). You will be able to upgrade these to lvl2 or lvl3, which will grant you higher energy regeneration and storage. + all of the upgrades will be visually different. Actually that will be your base you will be defending in multiplayer matches. The skin is different, but upgraded base will not have extra life in the mp battle or whatsoever.

bases lvl3 - lvl2 - lvl1; storage on the left side of the base, generator on the right

Upgrading to lvl2 will grant you convenient multiplayer + upgrading any of the structures will unlock full singleplayer & cinematics. lvl3 will be for the most hardcore fans who would like to get the most beautiful skin of the base.

there will not be any other virtual items. so all the players just testing the game will save the money unless the like the game, the rest can upgrade to premium easily.

    1. will be similar to other TD/RTS games (Kingdom Rush, Anomaly, Red Alert etc.), cca 3-5 USD

    2. September/October I would say. We are polishing and finalizing the game and want to release it immediately we feel that it is offering top experience, for both SP and MP

    3. 4-5 hours I would say if you win everything straight. Moreover there will be achievements granting you the replayability. + we are thinking that in case you reach all of the achievements, you will unlock hardcore mode that even game designers have problems to finish :)

    4. we are achieving retina by simply doubling the pixels, so it will actually look the same on iPad2 and iPad4. Still the graphics will be juicy, as you can see. Especially all the C&C fans will like it :)

Sounds good, other than a 3-5 price with iAP also? But should be interesting, will see. Thanks for answering my questions!

3-5 price in form of iAP for full SP + convenient multiplayer :)

you will be able to upgrade even further, to lvl3 base, which will give you even nicer skin for your base, but that is going to be totally optional and won´t limit the gameplay.

I will be updating this thread with new info about the game later on

it is having skirmish mode = match vs AI (when you don´t have internet or just don´t feel like playing against other humans :))

survival/endless mode - not at the moment, as this is not regular TD games, where the units are coming out of nowhere. But it is on our wish list and we would definitely like to add it. Imagine Starcraft having survival mode, that sounds like a lot of fun :)

updates: over the past few weeks, among other stuff, we have worked on matchmaking, so we make sure players of equal skills are playing together and the game is fun for everybody. We are using combination of ELO (which is pretty much the industry standard) + we combine it with other variables, such as latency, HW performance, etc. kind of invisible code stuff, but very much important for any competitive game.

Also, we are doing lots of testing. One of the unique things about Age of Defenders is that it is going to provide truly cross-platform realtime multiplayer experience (shiet, so many buzz words :)). In other words, iOS will be able to play against Android or vs web users, which is very cool I believe.

The obstacle about that is, as you can imagine, much more testing. Here is the snapshot of how one´s work desk then looks like :)

I ran into this game yesterday and finally, at 5 in the morning, I succeeded to clear the Convoy mission :D

Accept my gratitude dear sir for such fine wizardry *bows*

    A few suggestions though,

    1. Make waypoints handling a bit more easy. I still dont know how it actually works.
    2. Give a way to skip the in-mission briefings and other interruptions (like Jane's call). Gets annoying when you're playing it again and again.

heey, thx a lot for your feedback, we are glad that you like it :) convoy is at the moment one of the thoughest missions, we are working on making it bit easier.

    as for your suggestions:
    1. it´s very easy. single tap for setting one waypoint, double tap for adding one more. code in the background does the rest, calculates the best/safest way to that waypoint. later on, as you will be attacking more, especially in multiplayer, you will get familiar with that easily I believe :)

for the future we are thinking of unlocking this waypoint setting completely, so that the player would be able to set his own path. but it will require much higher APM and that may not be that comfortable for tablet users.

    2. definitely yes, in the next build :)

    Hey, sure no problem :)

I am now on the last mission :D

Cool. You're right. I figured it out via the hints and practice. And yeah, user-generated waypoints will be great. I sometimes do feel that I could define better waypoints than the system-generated ones.

hey ho, we have been busy for the past few weeks finishing the content of the game. we are moving ahead with the testing and than resolving technical stuff related to less RAM available due to latest iOS7 release :/

anyways, part of the game will also be some mad-skillz cinematics telling the story of the game. all of these pictures are hand-drawn, will be animated, voiceovered, telling the game story via its main hero, Joseph.

I will post some more later on :)
