This is my most regretted purchase on iOS. I knew going in the game was going to be poor, because the original boardgame (which wasn't even a boardgame) was poor 25 years ago. The tepid quarter century old gameplay is made even worse by one of the most lackluster and unimaginative digital ports I've ever come across.
Text doesn't update dynamically, so expect to see references to things that don't affect you simply because it wasn't coded to show only relevant information. It won't even distil information down to the necessary, so expect to see lots of numbers and modifiers and excess text instead of a nice simple "roll X to do Y".
The UI makes no concessions to the device upon which you view it. TotalBiscuit had the same complaint on PC as I had on iPad, it's a shoddy one size fits all solution that is always cumbersome. I'm on an iPad, why are you only showing me two equipment cards at a time? Why am I pressing buttons to scroll through lists when swiping has been a core part of this OS since its inception?
We are in a time where old gamebooks, like Sorcery, Lone Wolf and Fighting Fantasy all are given digital makeovers to bring them to life with interactive maps, dynamically updating inventories, and all sorts of new art and features. They didn't even need most of that, because they had pages of well written text to bring worlds to life in our imagination. This game only ever had "draw a card and roll dice", so it started with far less, and yet it contains barely a fraction of the polish and attention to detail even a single gamebook adaptation gets.
I sure hope you enjoy staring at the one and only game screen from boot to ending, while pressing a button to initiate a dice roll. Because that's all this game is. No attempt to represent the journey through the building visually, and even just a view of the stack of cards to show progress rather than simply shoving a counter on screen would have been preferable.
Everything about this port is lazy, and uninspired, and totally lacking in desire to enhance the original game in any way whatsoever. Do not buy this game.
