Hi,
I am quite close to releasing my app "Pocket Nature". It's a collection of interactive nature based scenes, where some are mini games (like matching colored ducks in a pond), summoning a unicorn by spawning flowers, a music mini game where you collect autumn leaves to play music. Now I am not sure in which category to put my app. It's not really a game, but more a digital toy. So I was tending to put it into the entertainment or life style section. Does anyone know of any data or research if some categories are better suited for app visibility? In short I'd like to know if there are any recommendation on app category choice or whether this matters at all. Game is tempting because it's the most popular category but also the most crowded one. Any input is appreciated, Thanks, Gottfried |

Games is relatively more crowded but then again it is the most popular for users to search. Entertainment will have less apps, and therefore greater visibility despite less footfall. If initial downloads are good, it will soar up the charts higher than in Games. You are competing with the creme de la creme in games.
Give your app the best chance by entering it into entertainment as a primary category and games as the secondary. It will still be searchable in this category. If it fails to work, resubmit the game to the app store and switch the categories around. When I first submitted my LinkPal Pro app to the store, I chose Social networking as a primary category - a very crowded category, ending in few downloads. I resubmitted my app into Utilities and it's been very successful since then. This sounds like a similar predicament. Good luck with what ever option you choose. Thanks for your tipps. I've done as you suggested and will start with Entertainment as primary and Games as secondary. Let's see how it goes.
LinkPal looks interesting BTW. |
