I was hoping that you guys could recommend some turned based RPG's for the iPad. I just got through with Gardian Saga and Dragon Fantasy and loved them both very much. I've played FF3 on my iPhone so I'm looking for something new to try out. I tried the search feature of the forums but didn't find a whole lot.... Thanks in advance!
I would highly recommend all of these games and with JRPGs being my favourite genre of game I'll give your two recommendations a try. Final Fantasy I-III are obvious choices but of course excellent. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/final-fantasy/id354972939?mt=8 http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/final-fantasy-ii/id354974729?mt=8 http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/final-fantasy-iii/id424591347?mt=8 Fantasy Chronicle, I'm playing through this atm as it's only 69p in the sale and is an excellent game so far although the menu system is a bit obtuse. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/rpg-fantasy-chronicle/id441242571?mt=8 Symphony of Eternity, by the same makers of Fantasy Chronicle and I thoroughly enjoyed the game and will get back to hunting down the optional bosses soon. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/rpg-symphony-of-eternity/id465918332?mt=8 Final Fantasy Tactics, not quite the same turn based as I imagine you mean but this is a great game and offers a good level of difficulty. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/final-fantasy-tactics-war/id446760220?mt=8 Ravenmark, in the same vein as Final Fantasy Tactics and is an equally splendid game. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ravenmark-scourge-estellion/id478016806?mt=8 Hunters 2, Turn based shooter in the Final Fantasy Tactics style again with this one being my favourite of this turn based style. A really really awesome game. http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/hunters-2/id489463556?mt=8
Yes, I'd recommend any of the Kemco games. Fantasy Chronicle and Symphony of Eternity were mentioned above. But also enjoyed Alphadia and am currently playing Eve of Genesis. Also, the first Ash was fantastic. Started playing the second one. Haven't gotten very far, but so far have been slightly disappointed. Hoping it improves.
I wouldn't say it's bad. And I haven't gotten too far into it. Just something about it doesn't sink in the way the first one did. Also not too sure how I feel about the chapter thing.
Thanks! I think I'll check out Fantasy Chronicle and Symphony of Eternity. I just hope the translation from Japanese to English is good.
Kemco's translation is pretty good compared to a lot of other JRPGs on the system. Personally, Fantasy Chronicle was my favorite. It's one of their most polished games. But they've all seemed good so far. Go from FC to SoE and you'll see a huge difference in the polish. That doesn't mean SoE is a bad game, it isn't. It's actually quite good. Just you'll feel the difference. So maybe on the other hand, you might want to start with SoE.
Not recommendations but here is a list of japanese style turn based RPGs but not featuring RPGs released the past month. I highly recommend Fall of Angels, Ash 1, and Knighturn (not listed, a SRPG). 7 Stories Adventure Island ? Alphadia AR.PG ? Ash Battle Legend Infinity Brigands and Barbarians ? hey While BG2 and Planescape are excellent games and Planescape certainly in my top 3 favorites evar, they never felt properly turn-based to me. Technically I know you can make it autopause at the end of a round, but the reason they always felt less turn-based to me than something like fallout is because you click to specify movement and the distance you can move is some continuous movement rate over time thing. You can estimate pretty accurately how far your guy can move in a round, but I never know exactly, whereas the kinds of games I see as being "real" turn based measure movement in discrete # of steps (e.g. fallout, spiderweb games).
Definately go with Crimson Gem Saga. Very high production value and... uhm... 50+ hrs gameplay, iirc.
Oh yeah, highly highly recommend this game! Had a FFX feel to it but obviously not as big a project. Probably my favourite turn based game I've played on the iOS but I forgot about it after clearing some space off my phone the other day.
And when that time has passed, do peek a sneak at The War of Eustrath, Wasted Lands and Time of Heroes. While none of these games are RPGs primarily, much like Final Fantasy Tactics they constitute a rather even mix of RPG and turn-based tactical elements, making them RPG/TBS hybrids. Still enough RPG to satisfy my escapist urges The Pantheon Cycle is perhaps a bit less polished and well-designed, particularly lacking in the available options and possible strategies in battle, but offers enough story, playtime and RPG elements to still be an interesting gaming experience, at least during the short time I spent with the game. (I suppose Dungeon Crawlers, Saturday Morning RPG and Battleloot all qualify for the turn-based RPG moniker as well, and possibly even Adventure Bar Story, but I found all four thoroughly disappointing in almost every way imaginable.) But yeah, to reiterate upon Muz333's point: Final Fantasy Tactics, above all, even though the game is as much a turn-based strategy title as an RPG. Ravenmark doesn't feature any actual RPG elements, but is one of the best and most polished games for iOS, and one of the most sophisticated TBS games for any platform, and thus very well worth your time and money, unless you detest the genre.
I remember searching around 3 or so years ago when I first got an iTouch for an RPG to play and was so disappointed. Gave up the search permanently until I stumbled across undeadcow's list and have no idea where to begin...it's wonderful.
Thanks, this makes me to update my list. I am grateful to B34$t's dual stick shooter list and rpg-site.org for inspiration.
