you get reset to 50 i think (whatever the amount you get upon release) and don't get any "carry-over" of extra codes you'd not previously generated. Also I am not sure if previously unexpired promo codes would work, but I assume they would. It's pretty much exactly as you said. You should request the promo codes you have left before the update goes live or you'll lose them. Promo codes for older versions still work, provided they have not expired already (do they last 4 weeks?). And you get 50 new codes.
