You should talk to every person. Many places are unlocked when you talk to people.

Change it to lidia or alfine w/ alter also upgrade them and buy a lot oh health and mana potions before going into war. I've fought with monsters so far above me but I've won because i prioritize the characters health. Always keep their health high when fighting enemies who with one swipe take away more than 1/3 your health
