I so look forward to the release of FFIV on iPhone, I've played it as a kid and did not finish it due to moving aboard (the SNES wasn't mine).

I also played it in Japanese, a language that I did not, and do not understand, but interestingly the 8 or 16 bit animation still tells the story, I knew roughly what went on. Since the FFIV experience as a child I have been looking for games such as this all my life, it would be great to finally know what they say after 20 years.

Are these games worth buying if you are new to the series?

Yes. Final Fantasy has a great sense of world exploration with enrivonmental "puzzles" and an open world dynamic. On the iDevices it is nearly unparalleled in depth. I regret that some of the iOS port tweaks weaken the difficulty but that makes it a better choice for novices and it does include an extra-hard challenge dungeon. Get Final Fantasy 1 for $3.99 while you can and if you like it then go for the sequel. If nothing else you'd be exposing yourself to an important part of video game history. Maybe it's bias but I prefer the "older" Final Fantasy games (FF1-6) to the newer incarnations (FF7+); to me Final Fantasy 9 marked the end of the franchise.

The games are good... but I can't deny that I have a lot of nostalgia for FF1 and wanting to have all of the games on iOS (since my iPhone is pretty much with me all the time) is a big drive for my purchase. Still, I do love classic turn based RPG's. IF you like the genre a bunch then it might be worth it for you, though there are probably better modern games on iOS to pick from for less money.

couldnt agree more! The series also died for me after the psone incarnations and I actually liked a lot FF Dimensions precisely because it harkens back to the roots of the franchise.

FF I is a little barren compared with more recent rpgs (like FF III for instance) but its a great introduction to the series and, as undead cow said it is for sure a piece of gaming history.
