I also thought that so I killed them to get achivement near the end.I will just say that decision backfired on me fast as they can be of great help in last part of game.

In last mission before you actually get to safe heaven they provide covering fire from car while you have to fetch some gasoline.Depending of how many of them are alive , you get more/ less covering fire from car.
