I don't think the maneuvers themselves determine the damage as mucb as your relative position altitude and angle to your opponent.

I'll say this: the AI certainly knows how to handle the SE and Spad. Chews my Fokkers up like nobody's business.

This makes more sense as position and angle would determine how much firepower I can bring to bear on the enemy.

So why would a split S manoeuvre bring such a result? I think it is time to reinstall Ace Patrol again...

The are very similar...both are a combined loop/roll that leaves you facing in the opposite direction from you started, and both drop you 1altitude IIRC.

Immelman returns you to the same hex, while the split-S advances you one or two.

My theory: With the Immelman, you swoop up, reverse, and fire on the enemy when you've returned to a level azimuth. With the split-S, you fire your guns WHILE DESCENDING from the loop. Therefore, you are firing from above your enemy.

It's easy to test my theory...try each and watch the 3-d firing animation. I'll see if I have time later.

Fokkers are easy prey for me...I think the second generation Halberstadts give me problems (as a Brit)

Oops, the Immelman DOES advance your plane...maybe it's the split-S that turns you around in the same hex.

I DO know now that when you use an Immelman, you fire after the loop is completed, back when you're straight and level.

I wish those old Avalon Hill PC games (ports from board games, IIRC) made it to the ios platform. Turn-based hex airial combat. I think one of them was named Red Baron, or had that in the title. I think the PC games gave the player a lot more squad management than this does.

Check out Phantom Leader if you are into squad management?

The Immelmann leaves you one hex behind the hex you're currently in. The Split-S leaves you one hex in front of the hex you're currently in. The Wingover leaves you in the same hex.

Also, each of these maneuvers gives you the opportunity to fire twice: once while you're performing the first step in the maneuver, and once while you're performing the second. The percentage shown in the corner only shows you what damage you'll do one step at a time. Watch the whole preview of the maneuver and the percentage will change, so you can see what you'll do in total.
