Default Puerto Rico HD - (by Ravensburger)

iPad Screenshots:

Puerto Rico has finally gone mobile! Experience one of the world’s most popular board games in stunning HD and with fast, crisp game play.

Travel back in time to the days of colonial Spain and become one of Puerto Rico’s island governors. Prospect for gold, plant crops, and build up your economy in an epic quest for island domination. Players will have to take on the roles of mayors, settlers, traders, captains, and craftsmen to beat out their opponents.

Features include:
► Beautiful HD graphics include new building designs and animated, in-game cut scenes.
► Compete against up to four other players, and mix and match between the computer, your friends (pass and play and local connectivity), or other players online through the Game Center.
► Specially designed tutorial and in-game Help feature for those new to the game (or anyone who might want a brief brush-up on the rules).
► Automatic resource distribution: no more fumbling with tiny board pieces.
► No set up of the game required! Press “Play” and get started. And best of all, no tidying up after a match.

So dust off your conquistador hat, pull out your doubloons, and join the over 250,000 fans who have already fallen in love with Puerto Rico.

In addition to being ranked number one for eight years in a row on BoardGameGeek.com, Puerto Rico has also received the following awards:

► German Games Award
► Austrian Gaming Experts Award
► Game of the Year Nominee, Germany
► United States International Gaming Award
► And many more …

I'd love to get some impressions from your NZers! As far as the AI - I don't think it's clear whether or not there are different skill levels or personalities (by which I presume you mean AI tactics) from the description above. I would like to hear about that too, but it's certainly not clear that it isn't there.

What I'm more concerned about, though, is is this game as irritating as Codito's previous effort, Tikal, due to bad design? Supposedly Tikal is getting an update that will help with that though, and maybe those efforts rubbed off here. Still, I'm a bit wary until I hear that it's well designed from multiple people. Also obviously I want the online to actually work (unlike Tikal and Ra), but it is encouraging that they switched to GameCenter for the online. Can you play games live online, or is it asynch only? Or is it live only?

I'm not completely sure but I think it's live only for now.

Re Tikal, Atticus and I got the update and so far, so good and there are a lot of improvements, including the much needed undo.

The beta PR played flawlessly but I was never able to get an MP match and never dl'd the final build.

For me, definitely worth the $8 anyway.

This is another reason I wish I had an iPad.

Oh well, I am hopefully that it may one day come to the iPhone/iPod Touch.

+1

I would love to have an iPad (Small World, Ticket to Train and now Puerto Rico) but it's simply too expensive for me!

Isn't Puerto Rico a very long game? Hopefully async will be possible through GC at a later date, if it's not already in.

Edit: Checking out pics of the board game seem to indicate a slight downgrade in looks for the iPad version. I wonder why?

Eye of the beholder. I would call it more subtle and thus more attractive than the early screenshots.
