updates and release dates

I noticed that on a new app the release date is the daten when yu send it for review by App Store and not the date when it is first available in the store (except you set the date into the future).

how does it work for updates ( I just did an update),
I was not able to change the old relase date in the database (message no change was done), so is it set to the real release date or even to the old first app release date - what is the best to do,
oherwise I again did not get in the whats new list
