ugh. The only reason I was able to get through it was because I had done plenty of exploring the galaxy before I went to do the story missions, so my ship had plenty of shield/armor/repair bots to pull through almost anything, plus the best scanner and three sunfires (one of the best thermal weapons) which is a lethal combination. Honestly though, I've sunk many hours into just exploring the different galaxies and doing side missions, the story isn't that big of a draw for me. Though I do plan on beating Valkyrie before Supernova comes out.

I played all the way through GoF2 + Valkyrie in June. About 25 hours, IIRC. To my knowledge, the crazy trading exploits (50 million in 30 minutes) had already been fixed. A few comments:

1. Story is pretty secondary to the GoF2 experience. If you like working your way to the top in an open-ended environment, then this is a great game for that. Exploring and upgrading are the central draws. The story is something you get around to for a change of pace.

2. You don't need a "strategy" to mine in the Void. You need a cloaking device. It's really that simple.

3. The only part of GoF2 that seems designed to encourage IAP is the Lounge that costs 50 million. But isn't that a 99 cent unlock in the HD version of the game? I don't see a problem with that. If you want to own your own station and acquire multiple ships, 99 cents is pretty reasonable. Personally I think their mistake was in setting an in-game price-tag at all. Anyone who grinds for 50 mil to save $1 of real money poorly values their own time, IMO. Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't that take at least four or five hours? $1 of real money to buy five hours of my life back is a pretty good trade. It's a different story if price-tags are in-line with earnings opportunities.

4. What's the word on Supernova? I could see getting back into GoF2 if some good content was added. Valkyrie was essential (for the equipment, not for the story).

That exploring contributed to the difficulty :P More playing means your level rose, meaning more and tougher enemies.

With number 3, the club can be unlocked via Buskat and 30 million credits in both HD and SD, which is quite easy if you are dedicated to the game and acquire that buskat whenever you see it. Alternatively, you can buy it straight away with 99c, which unlocks it on all saves on your device. And it is hardly compulsary in the game, and you aren't forced to grind up 30 mill to proceed.

And now that this has dropped to 99 cents on sale, it's a pretty obvious time for fence sitters to buy this immediately.

Still showing as $9.99 despite what AppShopper is saying, though i do want to get it just to have the HD version on my iPad 3 instead of the standard version!

yeah, seams to be a glitch with the App Store - bummer as we also have a lot of marketing behind this to make it to the top! You can still gift it to yourself for $0.99 though

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for the advice. For those not willing to wait for the iTunes glitch to get straightened out, I can verify that gifting the app to yourself at the sale price works.
