This does look slick, but I'd like to know how it runs on a 2G. There's nothing in the description or the requirements that excludes it (just says it's optimized for iPhone4 and iPad2). But don't want to download something that's going to run at 2 frames per second.

Great! Local multiplayer with real buddies (on some iPads) is the greatest fun believe me, better than online multiplayer BY FAR. Two questions:

1. For local (WiFi) multiplayer I WON'T need Apple Game Center, will I?

Incorrect. You can definitely tell apart 24 FPS and 60 FPS.

there's a very noticeable difference between Phoenix (30FPS) and Phoenix HD (60FPS)...

Surprised there aren't more impressions on this. Anyone tried it on a iPod 2G (doesn't appear to be restricted from it)?
