Hi I'm sure you have your own reasons for not wanting to engage in arena matches. Let me share mine with you.

I personally am not the super competitive sort who wants to see my name high up on the leaderboards through any means possible type. Instead I see it as an intellectual game vs my opponents, where I try to choose my skills carefully vs one specific opponent, and/or design one to defend against a wide array of other possible opponents. This kinda reminds me of Guild Wars, or even Magic the Gathering or similar card games where skill combinations are constantly being re-invented and such. Although I must admit gear (and therefore time and money comes under consideration too) will greatly affect the outcome as well.
Besides, its the only way to unlock the trial maps. The good thing, about military rank though, in case you are not aware of this, is that once you achieve the rank, you get to keep it. So even if you keep losing arena matches thereafter, you still keep the rank and therefore access to trial maps, and in future updates, I suppose the appropriate daily diamond rewards as per your rank.
Maybe you can try to take it easy and give it a try? You never know, you might even get to enjoy the strategizing. (assuming you're geeky that way like me too lol!)

In the arena, can i only battle people who are my military rank?

Currently i can only see "ladder players" except one person who is the same military rank as me (and 11 levels higher with full orange armour, and fully blessed) so there is no way i can beat him...yet

I want to actually battle people instead of just the ladder players.

EC4 is now a warrant officer. A couple hours ago, he was only a corporal. I would like to know how he can level to 50 so quickly on such a lowbie map.
