What party members do you have? And what level are they?

Some general tips:
Try to cast Weaken on the boss, it might take a few tries but it does make a difference.
Don't bother curing status ailments if you don't need to - eg don't cure silence if that character doesn't need to use skills, and blind doesn't seem that bad really - it only makes you miss slightly more often.
Use buffs eg Flame Rage.
Keep people healed.
Also remember to steal from it, it has a nice item to steal.

Re: elements:
If you look in the Secret Catalog, you can see the resistances of the monsters you have fought. Lower number = less resistance. You can often easily guess though - use fire on water/ice monsters, and water on fire monsters.
The icon next to a skill shows the element it is. Some weapons have elements too.

I have Lidia in my group but the desert town does not show up. Where is it? Do I need to be a higher level or a higher restaurant rating?

Have you seen the cutscene where Lidia says to take her to the desert and she'll guide you to the town? If not, you won't be able to go there. I don't think there's any restaurant rating requirement.

It may be a bit late but you can get King Crab from the last fishing spot before the exit of Fire Island. I got about 20 or so in 35 tries.

Can you please be more specific as to where these secret areas are located & how to find them?

Someone pointed out that there's a sandbar on Fire Island. At the screen where you first turn north, there's a small patch of pebbles that leads to a tiny island w/ a chest & fishing area. Fish for p. tuna here, but the odds of catching one are very slim.
