I think the exact opposite, for me IB 1 and 2 are great hardware showcases, but this looks much more fun.

Expectations can of course still be disappointed, but if they use it again to advertise hardware Apple will make sure it will hit high standards.

Unfortunately they seem like they'll be showcasing OLD hardware at this point!

Old device? Mobile hardware may advance quickly, but it's certainly not outdated.

I don't see it! If they want to sell it with hardware launch it could be iPhone 5 (unlikely as this rather fits iPad), iPad Mini (which might have slightly more performance than iPad 2/3 because of the lower resolution) or with iPad 4, which obviously would be awesome as they have some serious power to rely on to add really really impressive effects.
