App description: GSB is the ultimate space strategy game. It's a strategy / management / simulation game that does away with all the base building and delays and gets straight to the meat and potatoes of science-fiction games: The big space battles fought by huge spaceships with tons of laser beams and things going 'zap!', 'ka-boom!' and 'ka-pow!'.

In GSB you put your ships together from modular components, arrange them into fleets, give your ships orders of engagement and then hope they emerge victorious from battle (or at least blow to bits in aesthetically pleasing ways).

Gratuitous Space Battles aims to bring the over-the-top explodiness back into space strategy games. The game is for everyone who has watched big space armadas battle it out on TV and thought to themselves 'I could have done a much better job as admiral'.

This is not a game of real-time arcade twitch reflexes. GSB is about what ships you design, and what you tell them to do. Your individual ship commanders have total autonomy during the chaotic battle that unfolds. This is not a tactical game, it is a strategic one. These gratuitous space battles are not won by plucky heroes with perfect teeth, but by the geeky starship builders who know exactly what ratio of plasma-cannons to engines each ship in the fleet will need.

If fighting against a fixed fleet of enemy ships isn't your thing, then GSB also has two 'survival mode' maps. In these battles, your fleet is helplessly outnumbered by wave after wave of enemies that warp in and attack you. Your fleet's final defeat is certain, but how many enemy ships will you blast to atoms before you go down with your ship?

Your space fleet awaits!

Exactly! Buy ten ungratuitous generic games instead.

I'm a huge fan of the pc version so i toftt! The game is not retina ready but features no IAP. You only have access to the three basic races (so no expansions for now).
You can adjust different visual effects and the game runs exactly like it's pc counterpart.

Every feature is there except for multiplayer and the new galactic conquest mode so i hope that positech is listening! We need the other races and cross platform multiplayer! Other than that the port is great (oh and Gratuitous tank battles could be a great fit for the ipad too)

Side note: please include multitasking in the next update!!

The Touch screen seems to be working on some strange mirror image so I touch top left and it thinks it's bottom - right! Will keep trying and I'll let you know if it fixes itself!

It's wierd because the mirror image only happens on the fleet deployment screen (albeit the main part of the game lol)...all of the other screens work fine!

Same problem on ipad2. Mirrored screen controls make this version unplayable. Once it's fixed though, and I'm quite certain Cliffski will not let his game remain in this state if he has to go beat up the contractor that ported it, it will be great.

Ten dollars too much? Pleae I spent 30 on the PC version before buying the expansion DLC. if ten is too much for a great PC game, go back to FarmVille and Mafia Wars.

PS... turn your iPad over and the mirrored controls bug goes away. They must have tested on iPads ALWAYS TURNED IN THE SAME ORIENTATION. With the button and sync port on the right it works great, turned clockwise, the way I usually play, the mirrored controls bug.

Looks like its going to be great but right now it's really flaky.

For example, in ship design, flick between the blueprint and physical views a few times and it always crashed on my iPad 3.

And the control issue is also a problem (though thankfully there is a workaround). My impression right now is that this was rushed to the store and could actually have done with a few more rounds of testing and fixing.

No multitasking support either, it seems. Game itself is fun. Port is a little off.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 09:36 PM.
