I have been waiting for this game since last summer. I absolutely loved it on the Mac and bought all the expansions, however curling up in my recliner is a much more comfortable gaming experience for me than hunched over the desk.

So glad that Red Marble games brought this to iOS, been frothing at the mouth when I saw Cliffski's pics of it running on an iPad. Can't complain about $10 for the same game I paid $30 on my Mac and definitely going to get any expansions that they release.

Starbase Orion, Imperium Galactica II, Blue Libra HD, Traveller AR and now finally Gratuitous Space Battles! It's a great time to be a 4X/sci-fi action fan on iOS. I fear that I will spend my summer indoors curled up with my iPad now.

If they fix the numerous crash-bugs you will. But if not, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy your summer, for you would have long since thrown your iPad through your lounge window!

Any plans for a retina update? It would definitely make the cost a bit easier to justify for me!

Default More on the update

We've updated the update that we're submitting to the App Store this weekend. In addition to the multitasking fix (which should also fix the crash-when-the-iPad-locks problem mentioned above) and the orientation fix, it will also have the following:

-- crash when deleting a ship design in the Design window fixed
-- Much better handling of ship names and info details on the Deployment screen:
-- -- Tap a deployed ship icon to see the ship's name and its design
-- -- Tap a selected ship's name in the upper left of the screen to rename
-- -- Tap the selected ship's icon in the bottom left to see the ship's design and shield, armor, etc. effectiveness
-- -- Tap a ship design in the list to the left of the map to see the full name of the design and other info

These changes should make the deployment screen much easier to manage, particularly when you have a lot of ship designs or deployed ships.

I picked this up yesterday and I'm absolutely loving it. The only crash I've gotten is from pressing the view statistics button after a battle. Other than that, I played for several hours straight and didnt have a single crash. There is some bugginess and a few UI issues. The bugginess is mostly minor and a bit hard to describe. Examples: when I first unlocked a new module, then used it in the ship building area, it's picture became frozen in place on the screen so that even if I switched the module view to another category or switched to another hull type, that module overlayed what was supposed to be there on the screen. I've also had the module description text sort of freeze as well, so that when I went to view other modules it was an unreadable mix of overlapping stats. There are many areas of cutoff text in the game. Some of the UI elements need tweaking for touch use. The sliders and tiny arrows for ship selection are nearly unusable. However, overall I'm perfectly willing to put up with this stuff and I'm very happy to not be having the crashfest I was sort of anticipating, though I hope I can view my stats sometime soon, and I do hope the other bugs and UI issues get sorted out as well.

Edit: A couple more small things I wanted to mention but forgot: The in game instruction manual PDF is an editing copy, and it has a big gray border on the right side with a couple of deletion comments visible. The example ships available from the start of the game include several modules that are supposed to be locked and unavailable until honor points are used to obtain them. This could certainly be intentional but it seems strange to allow people to use locked modules.

Edit2: just got another reproducible crash. Happens when you press the alien face (choose race?) button in the deployment screen.

tl;dr On iPad 2 don't hit view stats=no crashes. Game is awesome but a bit buggy, still highly recommended.

Have you guys at red marble got any intentions to go retina? I know the higher Rez assets won't be a problem as you should have them for the pc / mac, im sure the issues lie with file size, memory usage etc.

It would just be nice to know whether you intend to do the game justice on the ipad3. And at worst case I can learn to live with my disappointment now!
