I think the game will probably be better overall since they upped it for 4/4S only, but as a 3GS owner I have to say it is a little disappointing I won't be able to whip out some super combos on the train and/or bus.

Also, looks from the intro trailer like a good amount of the characters are locked at the beginning (the characters blacked out/silhouetted). What is the unlock mechanism? Is it the 'points' or whatever they had in the original home version?

MVC2 is a much faster pace game than SF4 with crazy combos and setups. It doesn't have a comeback mechanic like SF4 ultras.

The crazy number of characters ensure that you'll find a team you like.
