App description: No In-App-Purchase. "Soul of Sword" is a Action RPG game developed by Uncle13. Hope you like.:)

Long long ago there were monsters everywhere. A taoist made a sword. He killed a lot of monsters. The world was finally restored to tranquility. But peace is always. Evil revived. The Monster King brought death and chaos. A young hero must pursue the Monster King to avenge his parents.

So I've played up to the first boss (a giant boar), so here are my overall thoughts:

1. The translation is rough. Errors abound, and there are even text strings which remain untranslated and left in Chinese. The storyline is simple enough, with a big bad and some guy with a sword who vows to defeat it. The characters you interact with are colorful and have personality.

2. The graphics are outstanding. A lot of care went into designing the world, and a lot of love went into shaping the world to fit a certain aesthetic.

3. There is a questing mechanic that works similar to a modern MMO, where characters ask you to defeat a certain enemy a certain number of times or collect a certain number of items. The one drawback to this system is there isn't a loot table - quests are linear and once you complete the quest the creature doesn't drop anything anymore. Since creatures when defeated don't give XP or gold (except bosses which award a few coins - not enough to buy anything but perhaps enough to grind - a long, long time) there is no reason to stick around an area once the quest is done.

4. There are two hefty consumable items I've encountered so far - one is a feather which brings you instantly back to the town and the other is (I'm assuming) a mobile save crystal, so you don't need to return to town. The feather is cheaper but requires a hefty trek back to your departing point (a return portal isn't activated like in Diablo), and the crystal saves your game and restores your health (which can't be restored except through memory crystals, at least so far).

5. There isn't XP or levels, but enemies do restore what I'm assuming is MP, when you kill them (although I haven't encountered magic yet). Later on in the game you get more hearts (similar to Zelda) but you're never overflowing in them - it's just a game mechanic because badder enemies take off more hearts than weaker enemies (for example, black boars take off two hearts while normal boars take off one).

6. There isn't a map (yet, at least after the first 30 minutes of playing).

7. There are a number of bugs. For example, the feather skill doesn't activate (double jump) after the prologue boss and when you get it again after the first actual boss it doesn't become a skill. I'm assuming that this is going to prevent me from completing the game as the next quest in my log requires a double jump, and the skill doesn't work. Meaning I will need to restart the game and play through it again to see if the bug reappears or hope the bug resolves itself (or maybe I'm just an idiot and it's not a bug - which is more likely the case).

Looks like a great game in need of solid QA and a more better translation. It's cheap ($2) and Chinese (meaning the creator made almost nothing from the sale of it in China since most games are pirated almost immediately - unless it's from Taiwan in which I'm totally wrong) so I bet anything the creator is depending on non-Chinese sales to fund the profit for the game.

I can confirm the game is not from Taiwan, since the app introduction using Simplified Chinese.
