A colleague of mine jailbroke his iPhone 3GS. He was mainly curious and besides wanted to "try out" some expensive GPS apps (before buying of course...).
What he's got is an unreliable iPhone, with weirdly behaving apps, and shorter battery time. Besides, you are as unprotected as a non-iOS user, since you can install any unchecked crap on your phone... (I read somewhere that in the official Android PlayStore there are about 3000 trojans due to the lack of the app review process, while such "apps" are completely uncommon in the AppStore.) All he wants now is to somehow revert back to the normal state, which seems to be imposible. So is it really worth it? I would definitely suggest not to jailbreak your iPhone, *unless* you really have to and you know what you are doing. Just my 2 cents. ![]() Please add your story about issues after jailbreaking your iPhone. Comments are also welcome. P.s. Originally I wanted to post this in the "Why do you jailbreak" forum, but I think this is also worth a separate thread. Last edited by Carlos; 06-05-2012 at 03:32 AM.. |

Well, your friend will use cracked apps :/
And why can't he just reinstall the official iOS on his phone? |

I jail broke my iPad 3 the day absinthe for 5.1.1 was released. Never going back. I love having control over my device, accessing the file system, saving the save files of my games so I can redownload them and keep my progress, I love being able to record my screen, all the great tweaks like quasar (windowed app usage and freak multitasking), backgrounder (real multitasking) barrel (changing springboard animations) and to many others to mention make it more than worth it. Heck, I can even run honeycomb with dreamboard.

I've only ever had two or three apps that didn't work properly after jailbreaking. The rest of my issues have been tweaks or other jailbreak things that havent been updated or that are buggy. Everything else has worked perfectly.
The only risk you take by jailbreaking is losing a few hours restoring...it's really not that big of a deal. |

I was jailbroken for quite a while under iOS 4, then got rid of the jailbreak when iOS 5 hit and did not really miss it except for MyWi. This past weekend I decided to rejailbreak my iPhone 4 and it went without a hitch... except that on day 2 I got a black screen and had to force reboot. I have not had this happen since being jailbroken the last time. So that's not a great start. LOL. But yeah, there are some nice features you can add. Especially MyWi. I am thinking I should have just installed MyWi and called it a day, but instead I installed some other things too, though not a lot. I don't know if the jailbreak itself is the culprit, or something I installed after, though all said they were compatible.

The only reason I can think of not to jailbreak would be if you're not good at following directions. Other than that, it's safe, it's easy (again, provided you can follow directions), and if you ever want to revert back to a normal iPhone, all you have to do is restore and it's like it never happened.
Your friend probably installed a lot of battery sucking apps and/or jailbroke iOS 5.0.1 (which has battery issues.) |

Thanks for your replies. There might be good reasons to jailbreak. My main reason against it is that you loose the official reliability and the "safety net" coming with the official OS.
Or put it otherwise: whom do you trust - Apple or some unknown "hackers"? |

It's not any less safe than say, having a Windows PC. Even then, it's still significantly safer. Some people even jailbreak for better security-- there's apps that can use the camera remotely in case someone steals your device, better password protection, etc. And it's not like, a vast terrain of lawlessness. There's reputations and certain people who are trustworthy in the jailbreaking scene. People do business and make money here, so they have good reason to want to be trustworthy. |
