Galaxians ($2.99 -> $1.99)

galaxians

Anyone try it yet?
If it's good, I'd like to get it before it gets pulled from the app store.
Like Tris.
Like (space) Invaders.
Like that really bad Donkey Kong clone.
You know what I mean...

I used to play Galaxians a lot in the arcades so I thought I would give this one a try.

The game plays in landscape mode with the score, fighters remaining, current level, high score and fire button on the left hand side of the screen - this is not configurable. The fighter is moved left and right by tilting the iphone/itouch. There are three levels of difficulty selectable from the Game Settings option on the startup screen. Also selectable are the in-game sounds (there is NO music available ) and whether or not to use automatic firing.

The game screen does not have a scrolling starfield as a backdrop so it feels like Space Invaders with swooping aliens. The three difficulty levels appear to affect the speed at which you can move the fighter as well as the speed of the aliens so, if you're used to the arcade version, the hard mode is actually easier than the easy mode.

There are a few bugs that I have found so far including the failure to always display your 'bullet' after firing, still able to fire bullets after the game is over and being unable to enter my name on the high score table.

The downsides for me are the lack of the scrolling starfield background and the absence of any sounds apart from gunshots and explosions - there isn't even a Game Over noise.

If you are desperate for a Galaxians game then this is a start but I'm not sure that it is worth the current price - 59 pence (99c) would be more appropriate.

Hi Chris!

Thanks for the comments on the gameplay experience.
I am currently adding background music to the game and I have fixed the bugs you have mentioned.
There will be a scrolling starfield also. By the way, this game is really based on the "Galaxians" game released on the ZX Spectrum.
I will release a new version soon, and you will get it for free, since you have already downloaded the V1.0
I will reduce the price to 1.99 USD I also think it might be a bit too much.

BR,
Istvan David

Also I am working on the remake of Dodge'Em,
you can see screenshots here: http://www.northteq.com/iphone/beetles.

I have added background music and alien sweeping sounds to the game.
Version 1.1 is ready for review in the appStore.
I will put a Youtube video of this new version later today.

I found some bugs this week and i had to fix them (the binary is upladed for review), so the review process will take a bit longer, but it will worth it

i didnt like the game when i got it
so gave it a one-star review
after playing more with it,
changed it to 2-star
but will upgrade it
if more improvements are at hand
eg portrait mode, better controls
- check out alien swarm and galag remix

Right now there are better sounds, background music,
scrolling starfield and ability to control the rocket by tilting or tapping on
the sides. Also it is much faster in V1.1

I will add the portrait mode in V1.2 and some more improvements.
I cannot make exactly like Galaxian, since it would be a copyright
violation. I think you will like this version much better than the previous one.

Thanks for the comments, it really helps me create an application
that is played and liked by the users.

Wow. I'm surprised this has lasted as long as it has. Given Namco's presence in the App Store, I thought for sure they'd have fired off a C&D order by now.
