And they expect me to pay risk $8 on the game without even giving me one offline game against one AI opponent other than the 'elves'? If there was a chance to get my interest going, adding some AI opponents for variety would have certainly helped, but now I don't even feel like playing it at all.

Consider me a lucky n00b, since I have been able to download the game and play it, but I don't understand one thing that's probably obvious:
When – using the default team – attacking with units that have different attack-options – like the Summoner himself or the Fire Drake – the game seems to default to the special attack. I think I should be able to choose between options, but I don't know how.

Check the last page it's NOT the apps fault. It's an ongoing issue with the AppStore right now. You can try deleting the game and redownload it to see of you can get an uncorrupted version

When the character image is highlighted, that means the special ability can be activated. In that case, the right side of the card activates the ability (either by tapping or in most cases dragging to the intended target). Drag from the left side of the card to get a normal move or regular attack. If you're playing on an iPhone or iPod Touch, it's easier to do this if you zoom the play field first.

There have been reports of the App Store serving corrupt downloads recently, so it might be that. Or it could be a memory issue in which case you should close apps and reboot the device. iPad 1 and iPod Touch 4th Gen might have the biggest issues with memory.
