I don't know why there's such a difference between the critical thinking levels of today's youth versus that of just 15 years ago, but if it's any indication of the direction we're going, then I don't have much confidence in the society my children will be raising their own kids in.
And just to clarify, I'm not making sweeping generalizations of all teens, just pointing out that there seem to be way more of those who seem to have not developed decent critical thinking skills today than there were during the past couple of decades. They are still the minority, but they just seem to be growing in numbers.

Sorry but I'm going to poke my nose in here. Not being funny but I feel you really are blowing this out of all proportion. It is a copyright and plagiarism issue. Very much a first world problem, albeit a very unpleasant one for Runic. I don't think the future of society is hinged upon what happens here.
As for his critical thinking, as you said he is 16, that should answer your question right there.
And on your other point
I was 16 about 15 years ago, and sure as hell I don't remember myself or anyone I knew at that age displaying any particular levels of emotional maturity or critical thinking skills. In fact I seem to remember most people thinking they knew exactly how the world works, a huge sense of entitlement and an almost pathalogical urge to argue with anyone who dared to try and put across a different view point. It was the level headed mature ones who were very much in the minority, not the other way round.
