One more question: portable saves via iCloud? This is almost a must-have for universal games in my opinion.

Not that I can tell, unfortunately.

The weapons system is pretty interesting, follows sort of of a strategic programming slant which is pretty cool. But judging from the video, the voiceovers are pretty laughable here (more the human characters than the robots). Also, the graphics come no where close to GOF. Given that I just put down serious money for a new iPad this summer, i think I'll be just fine with my GOF II HD.

Frankly, it puzzles me that folk get "laughable" out of that bit of voice acting. What I've heard so far has struck me more as "serviceable" than anything else. It definitely didn't take me out of the story. Voice acting is so rare on iOS games (and as I mentioned before, GoF2 VO is no better) that I guess folks are using the star-studded casts of console games as comparison.

The only games on iOS with truly great voice acting would be ports - Max Payne and GTA 3. Sacred Odyssey had decent acting. Shadowgun was also decent. But only GTA and MP, so far, have been truly excellent. So if you want voiceovers that're professional and good, play console games or the ports on iOS.

That's kind of my point. For iOS, the VO is okay.

BTW, now that I've managed to put in a few hours into the game, I'm actually really liking it. It's not perfect, but it's surprisingly well thought out. One thing that really helps is the way they've narrowed the scope. Unlike GoF2, which takes place across the galaxy, this game is limited to the solar system and for that reason feels more grounded and plausible. The graphics don't have the wow factor of GoF2, but they've done a good job making every location feel distinct. The weapon, mining, and loot gathering systems are actually interestingly complex (without being cumbersome) And the story is genuinely intriguing, though pretty familiar. There's a ton of depth here, but it's managed really well.

At this point, this is my favorite space game on iOS since Space Miner. Obviously it doesn't have the humor and charm of that game, but it makes up for it by the way it integrates all it's elements into a very satisfying (at least to me) mix.

Let me just reiterate: here we have a fun, ambitious, and well made game with no IAPs. You pay one price a get the whole game. And yet we have not heard any cheering from the anti-IAP zealots, only grousing about how the game is a GoF 2 clone (which it isn't). Frankly, I find this situation very frustrating.

Folks, if you hate IAP, support developers who don't use them. Put your money where your mouth is: it's that freaking simple. Otherwise shut the hell up. [/rant]
