Castles - A turn based strategic war game

I saw Castles on the App Store and was wondering if anyone's tried it? Looks like the type of game I might be interested in, but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired...

Anybody? The only 'review' I've got is a one liner from the App Store...

I'm waiting for a review myself, but then again at this price why not take a chance? Just cut back on a latte or something for the week and you have the price covered. I spend more than this on snacks whenever I visit Pike Street Market.

So why don't you buy it and write up a review for TouchArcade?

Maybe I'm just a bit too picky...but the graphics and GUI leave something to be desired, especially at the $4.99 price point.

Granted we're still in the app store infancy and everyone is still trying to figure out the right price/value for their apps and games, but you'd think developers looking to hit the $5-$10 mark would put some more emphasis on making their games look more polished than the $0.99 or freebies no?

Yes gameplay is a whole other value in itself, but graphics and GUI should start to play a major role when you start hitting those price points.

(And no, I have yet to purchase this game, purely for the reasons mentioned above)

I bought it - right now it's probably not worth the purchase. Whilst it's a good game of strategy (especially on the harder difficulty levels), for the price the presentation is really nothing to write home about. There's no menu screen to speak of, it actually throws you into a game, but you don't really realise that until you tap one of the buttons. MP, or move power is a total for ALL units, and I didn't realise that until I had wasted all mine moving one archer around. Moves cannot be undone, and the game counts 2 moves if you move to one square and then back to your starting square.

There's no animation to speak of, and for a game that only has a maximum of 4 types of units on the field at any given time, you wish that there was something to draw you in - such as a clever battle animation sequence like Shining Force had.

Sound effects and music are non existant.

Also, the game will not save your current game if you press the Home button. It's very stable, and the gameplay is nice, but the presentation ruins an otherwise good experience.

Thanks for taking the plunge Different.

Hopefully the developer takes some of the criticisms here (and the app store) and sees the value in adding additional features, UI improvements, sounds, etc. for future versions to come!

Drats! I was hoping for a decent strategy game. Thanks for the review, Different, good job. I wish there was some way we could communicate with these developers short of:

A) Ambushing them in a dark corridor then slapping them silly while yelling our requests

B) Blackmail
