There are weapons/armors from the blacksmith, and can upgrade the weapon/armor several times. You don't actually find weapons/armor in the wild, so it's basically just upgrading the 'level' of your weapon/armor.
You also have 4 equip slots. This is for random items you find like amulets and rings. The slots don't have a type per se, so you basically have 4 slots for different trinkets you find. These are things like +health, +attack, etc...
Compared to other games which are more loot heavy, Pen & Paper's weapon/armor system is pretty simple. I actually like lots of exciting loot, coming from a WoW background, but it works in a simple mobile game.
I'm most of the way through the main quest on Android, and still loving it. Unlocked 4 more classes now. It's a bit of grindy game, but there's always new stuff to see which makes it exciting.
