June 17, 2009 - Digital Chocolate's brilliant Tower Bloxx finally gets its threequel: Jungle Bloxx. Whereas the other two games in the series -- Tower Bloxx and Pyramid Bloxx -- focused on building, Jungle Bloxx switches the focus toward destruction. The goal is to gather beautiful gems perched atop Jenga-like stacks of ruins. You chisel away blocks by tapping them, bringing the structures crashing down. The fewer moves it takes to drop the jewel on a magical pedestal at the bottom of the ruins, the better your score.

Like its predecessors, Jungle Bloxx is an easy game to figure out. Within just a few stages, you'll see how gravity works when "pulling" blocks out of the stacks. Soon, you start charting out how the gem will fall depending not only on which blocks you destroy, but also how quickly you do so. You can tap blocks in rapid succession to create a straight drop, but there is a purposeful slight delay before the tapped block is removed. Plus, as you move deeper into the jungle, you encounter new blocks with special properties. In the fire kingdom, lava-like blocks burn away surrounding bricks when tapped. These special blocks (ice, vines, etc.) further help set up chain reactions to get that gem to the bottom in as few moves as possible.

Drop that gem to complete the level.

There are dozens of puzzles to solve in Jungle Bloxx, including special gem-matching contest between each area, such as your base camp and the fire kingdom. Here, you must wipe out a set number of gems in order to unlock a map that opens the way to the next kingdom. It's a little like the candy-matching minigame that popped up from time to time in Chocolate Shop Frenzy.

Jungle Bloxx will be out this month on the App Store. So far, it seems like a strong addition to the Bloxx franchise, and it's good to see Digital Chocolate not afraid to make fundamental changes to the different mechanics of each game in the series rather than endless replicate what worked in the original Tower Bloxx. Plus, it has oodls of cute monkeys in it. And everybody loves cute monkeys.

I've seen a similar not-as-polished version of this on the app store. I think it was called Box Drop. This version seems a lot nicer though and has a tiki towers type theme.

How does Tower Bloxx even relate to Jungle Bloxx and Pyramid Bloxx.... They're so different from each other...
