Archon and Lite

Yes! Finally. I've been checking the App Store (US) frequently for this title. I just bought it and sync'ed to my 3GS. Price is $2.99.

I tried to email myself a link via the App Store "Tell A Friend" but I'm still waiting on the email. Search for "Archon" in iTunes and it should come up.

About to play...now going back in time to my Atari 400...

Thanks for posting the link!

Played for just a few minutes. So here are some very cursory thoughts (in no particular order):

1. I have to get used to the virtual d-pad. My thumb ends up covering a bit of the battle area in the lower left corner so I have to pay attention. I'm not quite sure I love the response speed just yet; I need it to be fast for this type of game.

2. I also had to remember that you attack in the direction that your character is facing. It took a battle or two to remember the technique (it's been 20+ years since I played!).

3. Because I'm not quite used to the virtual d-pad, I have to practice some of my old style (e.g., running with the unicorn and quickly shifting direction to fire off a running shot). It's not immediately easy to pull off quick moves that I would have been able to pull off with the old Atari joystick. I also find diagonal shots more difficult. Again, this is probably just me getting used to the d-pad UI.

4. Graphics look good so far, but they're a tad small. This isn't a huge surprise given the screen real estate. Good detail, though.

5. Sound has been upgraded from the original. For example, the unicorn "neighs" when it moves to a new square and also when it shoots.

6. Gameplay is pretty much as I remember it...and that's a very good thing, indeed!

7. I did notice that the screen orientation is forced to landscape, and in only in one direction (home button toward the right thumb).

8. 3 levels of play so far (novice, average and adept).

9. I think there's supposed to be an option to play with the original graphics, but that must be something that gets unlocked. It's not immediately available.

10. There is accelerometer-based movement, but that's definitely not my game play style (the d-pad is still present and functional if you play that way). There's also a "left hand" option to move the d-pad to the lower right side of the screen.

More to follow as I play a bit more. Worth the $3.99. Archon is definitely a very good game! This is going to be my major time sink for a while. Thanks, React Games!

Meh'. I've been playing Good vs Evil since it's launch. I understand they are coming out with a new 3D version too. Battling 99 against $3.99, I'd take Good vs Evil over Archon any day.
