Default Galaxy Pirate Adventure (Universal) by Sunfish Studio

Today we are pleased to launch Galaxy Pirate Adventure (GPA) 1.0 for iOS, our new game where players are the son of the Galaxy Pirate King, who teaches them skills to prey on vessels traveling through space. Among the most graphically detailed and technically complex space RPGs for iOS, the game features 44 cinematic cutscenes and the story unfolds over 40 hours of gameplay. With a large galaxy containing 40 starports, 10 solar systems and 2 pirate kingdoms at different levels of technological advancement, presented with some of the most gorgeous visuals ever seen on the iOS platform, Galaxy Pirate Adventure further raises the standard of iOS games towards the quality of console titles.

The competition is fierce among iOS RPGs set in the future involving combat between space-faring vessels. With Galaxy Pirate Adventure, we aim to take the genre to an entirely new level of sophistication and artistry. Mile-long battleships are detailed, shaded, and rendered in impressive detail, and the camera view sails smoothly through an assembled armada of large and small ships. Running lights cycle on and off at the extremities of each ship, and our hulls are studded with metallic, utilitarian plates, modules, weapons, ports, and instruments. The ships might not look glossy or aerodynamic at first glance, but instead are worn and covered with asymmetric mazes of pipes, ducts, wiring, and defenses, making the overall space adventure experience even more realistic.

In fact, GPA includes 37 different models of ships, categorized into 6 types: Frigate, Transport, Destroyer, Cruiser, Battleship, and Battle Cruiser. Each ship model has its own characteristics and set of equipment, and can be customized by the player. Players can choose from 200+ different pieces of equipment (engines, shields, weapons, etc.) and 200+ crewmembers, each with their own price, abilities, and engineering skills. Players purchase and command three ships for the ultimate three-on-three battle.

The amount of detail devoted to procuring and outfitting vessels is considerable. There are many options: visiting Fleet, where all ships are managed; Warehouses, where unused ships and spare parts are stored; and Factories, where new ships can be custom designed. Fortunately, there is a Help button on every screen to aid the player in making choices and guiding him through the details and steps of various missions.

There are three basic kinds of missions. Players can choose smuggling, where they bring forbidden goods from one starport to another for a cash reward. Simple piracy is always an option, and the goal of these robberies is to steal the raw materials and rare equipment carried by Transport ships and Tankers. Third, players can hire themselves out as mercenaries, engaging in combat on behalf of others for monetary reward.

Feature Highlights:
* Immersive, 3D reality in interstellar space is the setting for multi-ship battles
* Learn the many skills to become a successful pirate
* 44 cinematic cutscenes enhance the drama of the narrative
* Select crewmembers, missions, weapons, engines, targets, and more
* 37 different ships, 200+ pieces of equipment, 200+ crew members, 10 solar systems
* Advanced metallic shader that real-time renders a diffuse map, normal map, reflection map, gloss map, and specular map on iPad 2 & iPhone 4S

The 44 cinematic cutscenes between locations are highly realistic and add to the reality of gameplay. At some points during the game the player can perform a 360-degree pan of the surroundings, exploring above and below in a full circle. Players begin an exciting journey to fight against enemies, and along the way must assemble a fleet of ships, become a commodity trader, and finally discover the secret of the galaxy and their true identity.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad 2, iPod Touch 3G, or iPod Touch 4G
* Requires iOS 3.2.3 or later
* 232 MB
Pricing:
Galaxy Pirate Adventure 1.0 is priced at USD4.99, and will be available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Games category. Review copies are available upon request.

So is there a solid storyline, or is it something more like the old Smugglers space RPG games?

Well GoF 1/2 aren't exactly simulation games, more like open world arcade flight games with trading and side missions.

From the trailer it looks as though you don't have direct control of your ships/fleet in combat. But I assume you must have some sort control over your fleet to fly to other solar systems and starports. Does anyone know how this works? Is it just selecting a target on a map and watching a cutscene or do you have more control?

Very similar to the DS Game Infinite Space.

I've found a few areas where the translation to english really didn't flow well, but so far it's a fun Space ship RPG diversion. You can have 3 ships, upgrade fittings, add and remove crew. Looks like later on there are special abilities.

Movement around space is just point and click to warp points. No real maneuvering. Missions seem to be kill target, or move goods from place to place. Thats all I've encountered so far.

I'm pretty happy with it for a Day 1 purchase. Hopefully the devs will continue to patch up the translations and tighten up the GUI a bit.
