Game Impressions

Had somebody thought to make an endless runner in the Mega Drive (Genesis) era, it would probably look (and play) a lot like this. But is it any good? Well, let's just say I think it's worth a look. It doesn't strike me as being all that impressive technically, the difficulty curve could definitely be smoothed out as it begins a little too leisurely and then ramps up the difficulty a little too sharply in my view, the grammar on display is fairly atrocious. But I do find myself coming back to it for that one more go, and endless runners generally aren't even really my thing.

Review

I would very much like to disagree with Gabrien. I love this game, not just for the gameplay, but the art, sound and music.

Necrorun is not unlike other action-orientated horizontal runners such as Monster Dash and Victory March. The gameplay is very similar: environmental platforms to jump, objects and obstacles to destroy, and a very unique jousting platform to occasionally break the pace. This is a long platform where the player attempts to unhorse an enemy knight by striking them with the lance riding towards them at high speeds. If you didn't like horizontal runners, than this wouldn't be likely to change your mind.

As Gabrien noted, this game's graphics aren't technically impressive, though it is artistically impressive. The pixel art is very detailed (by pixel art standard of course), and animates with great style and fluidity (again, pixel art standard). Effects like the lance's attack animation letting out a burst of purple energy, while leaving pixels of black smoke drift away is viscerally satisfying. This game is simply a piece of art.

Sound wise, it doesn't sound better. The clop of horse hooves on different environments are correctly reflected in the sound - from the crisp, hard dried soil to the soft, dense snow lands, the sound never fails to impress. Other sound effects include a magical thrust of your lance and occasional nigh of your horse during jumps. Everything just sounds exceptionally beautiful.

The music track on the other hand, is one of the best I've ever heard in any games that I've played (... ... ... I mainly play action orientated games so the SFX usually drowns out the BGM... oh and no Superbrothers for me...)
As always, it's neigh impossible to describe a melody in words, so the best I can do is to say that it's an Gothic (think vampires and Dracula) themed track with orchestral instruments and acoustic riffs and strumming patterns. It's energetic, vibrant and although it is quite short and loops upon itself, it never really boring.

Now, perhaps you'll hate me for writing up this review explaining all those things I like about this game and can't really express in words, I present you with a link to the full game, hosted on the developer's site. Try it for yourself, and give the music a listen. Though the iPhone version seems to run slower and just easier to play in general.

Actually though, I probably should've mentioned the music myself, as yes, it's a definite positive.

This game looks really cool (couple of YouTube videos available). Kind of like the anti robot unicorn. I'm not ready for yet another endless runner though.

I like the look of this and I'm a sucker for endless runners but there seems to be one key ingredient missing unless I'm mistaken and that is online leaderboards which is the point of a high score game in my opinion .

Hello everyone. I am the Game Designer/Programmer for Necrorun.

I just wanted to point out that the lack of a leaderboard is because Necrorun was developed in Flash, and neither Game Center nor Open Feint support it at the time.

I am expecting Adobe to quickly remedy this situation (at least with Game Center). And if not, I will look into alternative solutions.

I am well aware of the need of an online leaderboard, and I intend to have it implemented by the next free update, if it is possible.

Feel free to ask me any questions here, and don't hesitate to give us feedback.

As you can see, the controls are much more agile and precise compared to the flash version available (for free) on our website. The iPhone version also has an interface overhaul and a lot of other improvements.

I've been playing this quite a lot after I bought it, but found that the trophies and trials don't save if I delete the game off my multitask bar... is this intentional?
Oh and if you own the musician (bad wording here ) can you make some new music tracks? I'm excited by this thought alone

Graphic problem: the knight's head/body won't fall after you kill them. It looks very unpolished to see a head floating in the air after you knock it off...
