Presumably one doesn't have to recommend getting this for free; the TA and user ratings do the talking. But.. yes.

Yes, and no reason not to for free. Its only flaw is lack of universality.

Played some of this today, is the game mainly just a bullet grazing/dodging fare or is there variety later on? What I mean is, I feel like I could play through this without ever paying attention to the enemies and instead just focus on my ship and being sure to graze/dodge the bullets and I'd win. Am I wrong in this feeling, or is this basically the hook or gist of the gameplay?

Is the second game any better, or is it more of the same graze/dodge and you'll win kind of thing?

Like any bullet hell game it's mainly about scoring and figuring out how to maximize your use of multipliers, how/when kill enemies, when to use trance, etc. If your only goal is to survive through the game to the finish, then yeah it's pretty much just dodge and win.

DU2 is both similar and better in just about every way, and has additional variety with a second arcade mode offering different mechanics.
