We prefer 2D over 3D any day. The new Sam & Max games by Telltale Games are pretty sweet, I just wish they would do them in 2D (like in the original) instead of in 3D. I talked to them a while ago and the reason was that 3D was so much cheaper to do since you could re-use the 3D models in so many ways. A Vampyre Story is a pretty new-and-not-so-bad game (from some of the guys who did Monkey Island), and it has some pretty awesome graphics to boot. |

I think until either the price comes down or the controls are fixed I'm going to skip this one for awhile (which is rare for me) since I love these types of games.

The more I play this port, the more I like it.
One of the most polished iPhone title I bought; one of the few games that seems complete 'full PC/console' game'. Aside from the game (a masterpiece) and the SCUMM controls (I really like those) there are little touches I simply love...shaking for hints, turn the iPhone for pause, the voices and the sounds (lots of background noises)...best of all the instant switch old classic/revamped graphics. I REALLY REALLY hope more will come...I'll love Loom, The Dig, Day of the Tentacle most. But every old Lucasarts game will do, even if I didn't like that much Sam&Max or Full Throttle. I would love NEW LucasArts adventures for the iPhone....never understood why they stopped producing those... |

I don't think the controls are that bad to be honest. I guess all I want is them to be a little bit more sensitive.

I really see no other way for a SCUMM based title to do the controls on a touchscreen. The VERY initial ports of touchscreen SCUMM (emulator) used the 'touch to direct select method', and it was abandonated really fast to adopt a 'touchpad' like interface as it is now. If you double tap the 99% of the time you walk there (which is good). It's almost impossibile to actually PLAY and FINISH the game with a 'direct touch the spot' method that many seem to ask...at least if you do not have a finger that is stylus sized. Part of the game is exploring the background in search for hotspots....you cannot do that just 'trying' tapping everywhere missing important hotspots. Look for comparison how to play Return to Mysterious Island without the evident white hotspot marks...it could take AGES to finish it..just because you forgot to tap EVERYWHERE. The only viable option for a 'direct touch hotspot select' would be a fixed background with you moving the finger on it and somewhere a BIG text saying what you are covering with the finger if it's slectable. Honestly it doesn't seem to me any better than with relative movements. Just my opinion...I guess a lite version would help the undecided. It just take a bit to getting used to, just like a touchpad on a laptop takes a bit to get used to, coming from a mouse. After one hour, one is really immersed in the game and you really do not notice the controls....at least this happened to myself. And the game is AWESOME, just AWESOME. |

![]() Youth of today expect everything to be 3D, so that's why Sway and Labyrinth could both have been completely in 2D, Touchgrind wouldn't really work in 2D though.

I'm not 100% in love with everything about the new art - I think they often went for a "realistic" look versus the stylized cartoon look that works best for the series (DOTT and Monkey Island 3 were the high points of the style for me). Particularly since we're dealing with a small screen here, more stylization and less realistic detail would have been cool. I also miss some of the mouth movements that would let you know who was talking at what point. And why does Guybrush have to have that insane 90s boy-band haircut?
But never mind all that, this version is definitely worth seeing (even for someone like me who's played through the game probably 15 times, and who had the old-school version with the all-text inventory) and there are some great ideas here... I particularly like the instant switching between versions. The new sound effects and voice are nice, too. The controls have grown on me, but their sensitivity needs to be adjustable. The double-clicking is impossible for me. My finger can't move that fast. If nothing else gets changed, an update DEFINITELY needs to include adjustable pointer acceleration and double-click speed. |
