Well, I really LOVE Monkey Island, but I'm not willing to play it with THESE controls. Yesterday I played it for half an hour and it took me like forever to talk to the pirates in the Scumm Bar.

Click cursor to walk to pirate
Click bottom left to get to the menu
Search "Talk to" in the menu, then click on it
Move cursor again to pirate
Click on cursor to talk to pirate

I think you can double click to talk to characters.

The trackball is hard to come back to from monkey island 2, but it was fairly easy when I first played it.

Yes, you can double click to talk to characters and enter doors. And, um, that's how you play the original game anyway and since it's a touch based platform, trackball control is a reasonable way to play the game. but of course if you've tried playing MI2, you'll find the trackball controls to be a bit irksome.

I agree, it's REALLY bad. I poured a ridiculous amount of time into the game but everything takes so long to do it is so damn frustrating I'm probably just going to delete it and play MI2 since I bought it for 99c too.

"A bit irksome" is a very friendly description.
I think an iPhone is a completely different environment than a Mac or a Macbook, so "that's how you play the original game anyway" isn't really a reason for these "irksome" controls. As you pointed out, the second part of Monkey island does it MUCH better.
I think I'd rather play the original game on my MacBook than the Special Edition on the iPhone when it comes to the first part.
It's kind of impossible for me to dive into the game, as I always have to struggle with the controls.

Can someone help me? I'm at the part in the game when it just says, in big blue letters, Last Part Guybrush Kicks Butt. But (pun intended) I can't go past that. The background music plays, but I can't do anything.
EDIT: I can switch between the newer graphics and the original ones, but that's all I can do. I've turned my iPod off and back on again a couple times and the game still won't work.
