Game saves as images. Why isn't it used more?

I have a ragdoll game (can't remember the name atm) on my iPhone that allows users to save their stages and share them with others by keeping the save file as an image. The image is just a bunch of colored blocks, and the user can upload them into the game, and the game converts it into the level.

Why don't more games do this? Would it be possible for games like The Quest or Zenonia? It would be awesome to be able to share and back-up saves in this manner.

Spore for the PC saves information through images too. You can swap characters and stuff using JUST the actual picture of the creature (.png) and no other file. Then you can open it up in game and it's the full 3D rendering that you can manipulate. I think it's incredibly smart and had no idea you could do that before I found out that's how they did it.

Anyway, yeah. Should be used more
