App description: Flame kick werewolves, perform thrilling acrobatic stunts, and run a trillion dollar mining company in Riverman Medias combat-action masterpiece!

#2 Best-reviewed iOS game of 2015 - Metacritic.com

From the creators of the award-winning Pizza Vs. Skeletons comes The Executive: a fast-paced, cinematic, martial arts action game designed from the ground up for iPhone and iPad. You are the CEO of a company that has been infiltrated by werewolves, and its your job to save your employees, and eventually the entire city, from their dastardly schemes.

OUR PROMISE TO YOU: No ads. No getting suckered into buying more stuff later. The whole game, for one price, for all updates, forever.

The Executive combines a high-speed combat system, timing-based running and platforming, 120 hand-crafted levels, a full inventory of moves and upgrades, and a simple mining company simulation for earning money, all into one cohesive experience. The fighting engine evokes a cross between Street Fighter II and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, with controls designed from scratch to be ideal for touch screens. The platforming (or stunt) segments require precise timing, similar to Elite Beat Agents but with an emphasis on visual timing instead of musical rhythm. Both of these mechanics are brought together by the SP bar, which allows you to execute gesture-based special moves like flame kicks, health restoration, and even morphing your characters arm into a silver spike to impale foes.

The Executive uses Riverman Medias proprietary animation system to bring to life its large, hand-drawn 2D sprites with an unprecedented amount of smoothness and detail. The Executive represents the pinnacle of Riverman Medias research and development into new 2D graphics technology.

What would you guys do if I told you all it takes to get on board The Executive train are 3 words?

Barbell. Slinging. Minotaur.

That is all.

If you've been an avid mobile gamer and a member of TouchArcade for the last few years, you'll know that I went completely bonkers over the art and music in a little tilt-based endless faller called DeathFall by a couple of dudes known as Riverman Media. That was a long, long time ago, but DeathFall itself was WAAAAAAAAY ahead of its time when it came to the amount of polish (hah, how we all love that word) you'd find in mobile games. The potential I saw in Riverman Media back then was NOTHING compared to how their next title, Pizza vs. Skeletons turned out. It, to this day, remains a staple of iOS gaming and if you don't own it, do yourself a favor and fix that. If you're wondering why the hell I'm talking about Pizza instead of The Executive...well simply because there's no other way to describe this new game other than: The Ultimate Evolution of Riverman Media.

Yes. If you guys thought Pizza vs. Skeletons was the quirkiest game you'd ever play, nah...think again. I don't wanna go into too much detail, but believe me when I say that if you love games that never stop throwing new things at you, you'll absolutely dig this to the moon and back. I think we've all become accustomed to how limited the scope of original iOS games are ('coz you know, mobile is mobile), with a handful of enemies, a couple of level themes and recycled music...but man, what you're gonna see in The Executive by the time you're done with just the first 20 levels will likely cause your mind to blow.

I need not praise Riverman's art because...WELL, HAVE YOU SEEN HOW AWESOME THIS IS!?!?!?!?!?!?! Of course you would expect impending doom if the art didn't move as well as it looked, but I can assure you that the animation is masterful. The music too, is something else. There's almost a not-so-8-bit feel to everything and is a perfect fit. That said, if we're at a point in life in which we have to discuss art and sound in a Riverman Media game, I think we deserve to be shot...so let not, okay?

Beyond this quirky, unique audiovisual masterpiece lies a game so good that it'll make you want to punch yourself for ever playing one of those Injustice/Immortals/Mortal Kombat X/Marvel-type fighters. Granted those games are mostly about collecting (thanks Carter!), but the core mechanics are somewhat similar to The Executive's and it's so, so, so satisfying to say that Executive absolutely makes those games look like garbage. You're not just swiping left and right like an idiot, hoping to land a few punches when your opponent isn't blocking, until you have enough strength to fire up a special move. Instead, you have a more complex system than a game like that Global Taekwondo Tournament game, where you have both high and low attacks and high and low defense. That makes things super interesting when you across situations like what I like to consider the first mini-boss: A green human-sized jelly with arms, that has apparently consumed a human being at some point in its life (no more spoilers...promise). See, while it's attacking you from above, it may have temporarily turned to stone (almost pyramid-like, I guess) from below, leaving you in a situation where you're forced to wait until there's an opening to attack. Not only that, but certain enemies set off visual cues that warn against attacks that, for example, can only be stopped by a powerful attack of your own. It's very strategic and immensely satisfying. I don't think I've ever played another iOS game that looks so simple on the top, but is so deeply layered underneath. You also have upgradable and unlockable moves...

...which can also be sold if you'd like. What that does is opens up another part of the game, which is quite complicated for me to put in words. If you feel like you don't need a move, or a certain upgraded level of that move, you can sell it for the price you paid for it and use that to either buy something else, or invest in some lovely mining operations. What is mining you ask? Well, to make things SUPER simple (and I'd love if someone could explain this in more detail for all you lovely people), while you're away from the game (even completely killed in multitasking), the game will be making more and more money for you. Yes, completely opposite from some stupid free-to-play wait timer mechanic, THE EXECUTIVE WILL BE MAKING MORE AND MORE COINS FOR YOU TO BUY STUFF! How.Cool.Is.That?

Oh, and the rhythm-like running sections aren't a gimmick. Successfully "perfecting" them will increase your SP bar, allowing you to use one of the special unlockables such as full health, shield, etc. in the middle of a fight...which could ultimately save you at the most crucial time.

Okay, so we've got the basics covered, right? Convinced? Good. All that's left for me to say is that this is a 400 MB something download, 1.7 GB installed (TRUST ME, THAT'S 1.7 GB you'll never ask for again), there is a HEAAAAAAAAAAAP of content to play through, no IAPs whatsoever (love you Rivermen for constantly giving us the best premium experiences) and the game has, in my opinion, bar none...the best app icon on iOS to date.

Oh...and if you stuck around long enough to read through this entire post, here's a can of soda courtesy of the angry employee/werewolf at the beginning of the game.

Hi everyone,
This is Jacob from Riverman Media.

First of all, metalcasket, we are incredibly grateful for the time you spent writing this very thorough and accurate review. I can't tell you what a relief it is that all the elements we put into the game are coming across. We do a lot of playtesting, but you never know what the reaction will be once a game's "in the wild" and I'm so happy that at least one person finds it enjoyable. That makes it all worth it.

As for everyone else, thanks for checking out this thread, and thanks even more if you decide to try the game. My brother and I love playing games, we love making games, and nothing means more to us than when we can entertain a few people with the stuff we create. We're so lucky that we get to do this, and even luckier to have all of you, our players!

Game on!
Jacob

I definitely won't be the only one! It's been obvious since day one that you guys make games for gamers and don't give half a shit about App Store trends and fads. I seriously tip my hat to you guys, over and over. Like I said above, you guys can have all the space available on all my devices for the rest of eternity.
