App description: Swipe&slash through 60 levels of an action-packed underworld adventure!

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a classic tolkienesque fantasy world was attacked by pulp-science fiction monsters from outer space? Now you can find out! Dungeons&Aliens is a free to play mobile action game with space mutants, brave dwarves, and awesome magic. It combines swipe&slash controls (proven effective on both aliens and fruit) and simple tower defense (as easy as placing vegetation to stop the undead). All this makes up for one fun and colorful adventure!

Fresh mechanics: Swipe&slash meets tower defense
Hand-drawn, old-school storybook graphics
Upgradable spells for spectacular destruction
A comedic mashup of sci-fi and fantasy clichs
60 challenging levels to beat and to master

The story begins with three Dwarven mages returning to their homeland after a long and tiresome journey. All they anticipate is a hot meal, lots of mead, and a comfy bed. The last thing they expect is an alien invasion! The ancient City of Dwarves, its vast dungeons, and the volcanic caves beneath it are engulfed in panic, chaos, and terror! The hasty Red Mage, the most daring of the trio, teleports himself into the deepest depths of the dungeons, planning to fight his way up. His fellows rush to his aid. As lasers and magic missiles cross paths, an epic war of two worlds ensues!

You will battle a whole gallery of vile alien monsters from slimy grunts to floating, laser-wielding bosses. Youll make your way from the heart of the Dwarven dungeons up to the surface, pushing back the invaders and defending civilians. Theres gold to be found on the way, powerful spells to acquire, and a whole underground realm to discover. Are you ready?

A word from Michał Marzęcki, the studio lead:

Weve had a vote in our team to decide if we should make another science-fiction game like Hyperide, or go full fantasy mode. We came to a draw, so it seemed like a natural choice to mash up both genres. Yes, Dungeons&Aliens is a weird sounding title, silly even. Then again so does Clock Simulator, and the players loved it as much, as we enjoyed making it. At this point weve stopped asking ourselves why and were sticking to why the hell not its more fun that way.

Uh... seems fun at first but turns out... it's not.

Graphic

The graphics are very cartoony and they fit the humorous and funny style that this game is going for. The aliens are a bit too mundane for me but I only played the first 12 levels or so, that may very well change later. The few fireballs I threw felt impactful but I also did not come to see all the graphical glory. From what I have seen it feels slightly above average with a decent UI as well.

3/5

Sound

I like the music, though the high pitch sounds sometimes may turn this linking into annoying quickly. Attack sounds feel a little bit too repetitive and aliens are pretty quite as well. There is some sort of voice acting but its all like a cartoony muffled thing with real text - so average I guess? There is nothing that really stands out to so I give this the perfect average rating here.

2.5/5

Gameplay

This plays like a plant vs zombie game without the towers. Instead you have to constantly (I mean the WHOLE time) swipe furiously over aliens to kill them with your basic attacks. Once you unlock a wizard you get some special attacks like fireball or lightning which require some special swipres (2 fingers from top to bottom or left to right) and a release where you want the spell to go.

By doing this swiping you kill enemies as those attacks will do some dmg. At the same time people run from the right side of the scren where the enemies are coming from, to your side of the screen. If an alien catches one, he does slowly, or faster the later the stages go. The more you safe the better your 3 star rating.

The thing about this gameplay is first that it is super exhausting! I've only played for like 20 minutes and my arm is hurting as if I would have played SC 2 all day non stop. The next bad thing is that those special attacks have ammunition WHICH NEEDS TO BE BOUGHT WITH THE ONLY CURRENCY THE GAME HAS. W T F! This means, that after you've used your 9 fireballs that's it. No fireballs for you. You need to purchase them for 50g a piece and after one mission you get about 25 gold? The thing is that the basic attack get's useless really fast (there are just way too many enemies and later healing enemies are tough to kill and take time so the little ones get by). To upgrade the basic attack I need 1000 gold... yeah right. Even with all the bonuses I've gotten I don't have enough by stage 12 yet and I did not buy a single fireball yet. I have died 3-4 times at stage 12 (which judging by the interface/map is still VERY early on) without completing it.

1.5/5

Payment Model

Well. See the above gameplay paragraph for more details but this is by far one of the worst monetization models I've come across and that's for mobile - yieks! You need to buy your (necessary) special attacks for 50g which means you need to do 2 missions at the beginning to buy one attack which you need multiple of for the "later" stages... At the same time you can get a tiny amount of money after X Hours (2 chest timers basically of 8 and 6 hours I think).

Who thinks that the only attack you can use except swiping till you get injured should have paid charges? This is the ONLY attack that will break up gameplay and lead away from swiping 100% of the time. AND IT COSTS MONEY.

This payment model is just the worst. Ever.

0/5

Conclusion

Oh man! The dialogs seem genuinely fun, graphics and sounds are ok or even decent here and there and then this game get's ruined by the worst monetization ever coupled with exhausting gameplay mechanics and locking your only other attack behind money... Upgrades cost 1000 gold... I am just speechless. Avoid at all cost!

Thanks for clarifying that.

Actually I tend to give F2P games a fair chance to convince me and some even did. But what you describe here is completely out of question. No chance. I'm out.

Yeah... I really hope that there is something that I am missing but I just can't find it. :/

Hi!

We were playing the game differently, it seems. As we tend to think of it as a Fruit Ninja / Plants vs Zombies mashup, frantically swiping the aliens comes as a large part of the actual fun here to us. The spells were supposed to be special moves in case you get into a difficult position. They were never intended as an equally used alternative to the basic magic missiles.

We do hear you, however. In a coming update there's going to be an extra chest at the very beginning of the game with some gold - enough to get you started on the upgrades.

Further down (or rather up) the road, you'll start to encounter gold mines, that - once you recapture them - provide a steady flow of in-game cash, generating over time.

There's also the special chest, that gives you a couple of spells once in a while. And finally - there's the option to double your level reward by watching an ad. Not much point on lower levels, but as you go up, a double reward should be worth it.

If you feel FORCED to buy in-game cash in order to play, then that's a big problem and something we certainly don't want. Hope we'll be able to convince you to revisit the game, once we rebalance this issue. It didn't occur to us during testing, mind you, but the testers DID spend a lot of time playing many iterations of the game and it simply didn't feel that challenging for them anymore.

Anyway - many thanks for your assessment of Dungeons & Aliens and for the time and effort it took you to play it and write it all. Oh, and special thanks from me, personally, for your kind words about the dialogs. I wrote those :-D

The way you handle criticism deserves appreciation. I'm going the grasp the outstreched hand and try out your game once you have made the announced adjustments.

It should be noted that this latest update made some nice enhancements.. Economy balance issues were addressed both in-game, and also by way of iap. Now, any iap will remove ads and give double coins forever (lowest cost purchase = .99 cents). So congrats on the balancing, team.
