Henry the Cloud: Time to shine for this little endless runner!



Hello everyone!

Welcome to Dual Cortex Gaming’s 8th devlog, where we will give some insight into the weal and woe of our studio and the road to our first and recently launched endless runner game, Henry the Cloud. We want to keep the forum as clutter free as possible, while updating you guys about our little game and provide you with a good read. Therefore, you find the official release post here! Today, we want to elaborate on the things we have done after finally publishing the game. And, moreover, the things we already initiated prior to that exciting moment, in order to prepare for it.

Marketing
When we started working on Henry the Cloud, we knew that we had to start early on with the process of marketing our little game. Many indie studios create marvellous products but forget one thing: if no one knows your game is out there, it will only be played by your thirteen year old nephew and his friends before being consumed by the dark abyss that is the Play and App Store.

So, what was our approach?

Pre-launch:
  • Dev logs!
  • Social Media coverage (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Beta invitations to over 4k influencers (Websites, Blogs, Streamers, etc.)
  • Press releases

Sending out beta invites for iOS proved harder than we thought. Because we wanted to accompany the invite with a message of our own, not a generic Apple TestFlight email, we were forced to get inventive. So, what we did was to load an Excel sheet with many email addresses that were all aliases of a single Dual Cortex Gaming mailbox. We created scripts and tooling to retrieve mail from this box, extracting the unique invite code and writing them to a file.

We wrote several templates for messages depending on the type of recipient. Bloggers, streamers, YouTubers, websites and news outlets: they all got different, personalized messages. We took a look at thousands of channels and added a personal touch to every single one of them.

After we did that, we injected the unique invite codes into the personalized templates, and sent them out using a mailing tool we wrote. However… oops! We were seen as spam, and got our main Google account suspended, leaving our videos with 2.000+ views on our main YouTube channel behind us.

Our appeal to Google (“this is not spam! These are personalized messages we put heart and soul in” - which is true!) was rejected, and we were forced to create a new account. Old account: rest in peace. You will forever be missed.




Important!:The observant reader notices that sending Apple TestFlight invites is something completely different than requesting a review of your game. Just like us, be sure to send personal emails to get reviewed. Tell them who you are, what you are doing, and what your game is about. Be honest and true and you will get featured!

Since that day, we have been featured on various sites and blogs. It is extremely fun to look at Let’s Plays or read reviews about our game, and are proud to boast with quotes like:

We were mentioned in an 'Upcoming' post here on TouchArcade (Thanks Tasos!) and, in addition, placed #12 in the Hottest 20 games. We also saw a featuring in Android Police’s 30 new and notable Android games.

We have since published a few patch releases, containing bug fixes, reducing the amount of ads shown, tweaks in gameplay, and an improved map.

Love the game and the devlogs are a cool way to reach out to fans.
