App description: WHAT IS BUTTON MEN?
Button Men is a quick-playing strategy game for one or two players where the goal is to capture your opponents dice while protecting your own. What makes Button Men unique is the set of characters you choose to fight with. Each artistically rendered character has their own unique strengths and weakness adding a deep level of strategy that will leave you saying Just one more game!

Players choose a character and take turns capturing each others dice using a combination of Power, Skill, Poison and Shadow attacks:

POWER ATTACK: One of your dice of equal or greater value than one of your opponents dice.

SKILL ATTACK: Several of your dice add up exactly to the value on one of your opponents dice.

POISON ATTACK: Worth negative points. Force your opponent to capture it and see them lose points. If you keep your own you lose its full size in points.

SHADOW ATTACK: Capture an enemy die that is equal to or greater than your own.

It takes a great deal of strategy as well as good luck to win a game of Button Men.

Button Men won the Origins Award for Best Abstract Board Game of 1999, and the paper version spawned dozens of expansions with hundreds of different characters. This edition includes 24 characters and special rules for Shadow Dice and Poison Dice, with expansions soon to come.

Well executed and faithful to the excellent 'manual' version. - jgarbers1

Fantastic implementation of the dice game. The graphics are nice, it plays at the right speed, and it's not as nerdy as cracking out actual buttons and polyhedral dice. - junkurchin

Good stuff! Reminds me of some dice games I played back in high school. Graphics are some of the best I've seen for a iPhone game. - ocragi1

After only a few minutes with this game I was hooked. This is a great unique dice game that is a definite page one app for me. Very entertaining and a must own. - ChronoGear

Like all James Ernest's award-winning game designs, simple and quick mechanics lure you into hours of strategy, as you work through the interactions and find hidden depths. - Fabozz

Played it for a little while and I have to say that it's a lot of fun. It's basically the exact same game as the original "Button Men" outing from Cheap Ass Games... and I was glad to see their logo at the front of the game so I could see that they at least had some input to the game.

The game is basically a simple dice game where you try to capture your opponents dice through various means. There is a fair amount of strategy to the game and that was what drew me to it back in the late 90's.

You choose a character to play and each of them have different dice that come into play. The bigger dice (12 or 20 sided) mean that the character is a stronger character, while the smaller dice (4,6,8 - sided) means that they would be quicker. You choose the one that you like and go to battle.

You can capture an opponents dice in one of three ways. First you can take any die with one of yours that is higher in number... this is great if they had a 20 sider that rolled low and you can take it with a lesser die. You can also ad up some of your dice to total the exact number of one of your opponents. And, lastly, you can "shadow" a die. This means that if you have a die of equal sides, but is less than an opponents you can take it. For example if you rolled a 6 on a 10 sided die and your opponent rolled a 10 with the 10 sider you can take it.

Play goes back and forth until all the dice from one side have been captured and the point totals are figured out. The one with the highest total wins the round. You get a point for each side of a die that you capture (a 10 sider is worth 10 points) and half the points for any of your dice that went uncaptured. Basically pretty simple, but very fun.

I like the game a lot. Some might not like the $3 price tag, but it has already been worth it for me. There might be a sale, but for an extra couple of bucks I'm glad I have it now.

One thing that is really lacking in the game are stats. Nothing is kept and it comes down to a "one off" every time you play. I'd love to see this fixed and some added achievements... which I always love. The game can be played two player style (on one device), but this game could really use some other forms of multiplayer... okay.. all forms of multiplayer. Lastly, it wold be fun to customize your own Button Men. I know we did this with the original game and even turned it into our own version of a "wrestling fed" back in the day...

If those little things get worked out I could see this becoming a huge hit with people challenging other Button Men from all over the world. I think it would then be one of my top five apps. Until then it's still a great way to kill some time... and, as the game likes to say... Beat People Up.
