Angry At&t is downgrading the EDGE network!

http://gizmodo.com/5122738/att-downg...lesser-service

I have already noticed no reception at places I was able to use my iPhone before, for the last couple of weeks. I guess this explains it.

Update: Apparently Gizmodo pulled the story, so maybe it isn't true, and I have just had bad luck. Here is hoping that it wasn't true!

Update 2: I found another source:

Haven't noticed anything yet.
Phone: Blackjack 2
I have 3g on my phone turned off to save battery power (doing this causes my phone to last for 4-5 days before needing to recharge).

That does suck... Especially since EDGE takes up less battery life

Well, I live in a redneck gathering place, with about 3000 people in the city, and the remainder in hollows and the outskirts of a midsize city in the next county, and no other providers in the area. Great. No 3G in the area, and EDGE already sucks. This is great, and I had already read the article, but I didn't find it worth a thread. AT&T, you are about to become the #2 in cell service, if you don't stop making bad decisions.

I'm starting to wonder why people bother with AT&T... Might as well get an iTouch and another cell phone on the carrier of your choice

Well where I live, if you have AT&T you get above average and excellent coverage in most places (except indoors although you still have a signal, usually 1-2 bars) and Verizon/Sprint/T-Mobile are not so responsive signal wise.

Up at my college AT&T gets the best signal out of all available carriers, everywhere on campus/town (except basements) one typically has 4-5 bars.

Back on topic: Most people rely on an EDGE network for multiple reasons.
1. It is available in more places than 3G is at the current moment
2. It eats up much less battery than a 3G connection does
3. Most people with older phones use the EDGE network

I don't really mean network-wise. I mean yeah, it's a great network. Probably #1 or #2 in the US right by Verizon.

But jeez, they are just SO expensive, and the only thing they offer that is unique is rollover minutes.

With all the talking/texting I do (just to my girlfriend), I would have to pay $150 a month to own an iPhone with AT&T, whereas I will pay $55 a month with T-Mobile

Thats the exact reason I don't own an iPhone. (not to mention I'm on a family plan)
