There is a game called Blue Skies with similar gameplay, and there are several titles by Dumb Games (developer) with similar concept. Hope that helps.

There really aren't a lot of decent shmup games in existence yet. I'm not sure, but it's probably due to control issues. There are few that show some promise.

Oddly enough, the best shmup game currently out there is probably Space Ninja, even though you can't actually shoot. But, they've got the feel of the controls better than most.

Try the free version of Dragonforce, it looks OK and hopefully the real version (when it comes out) will be even better. Space Deadbeef is reasonable too, and also free.

Blue Skies is my favourite. It's only $0.99 and there's the lite version too.

1941 was really more of a top-down shooter, while Blue Skies gives you free roam so IMO it's really different, but you can't go wrong with checking out the lite version..

And yes, 1941 was a kick-ass game back in the day...
I remember doing that upside down spin....

If you're looking for a vert shmup, there's Sentry Alpha, Sky Thunder, the Dragon Force demo, and rRootage. Of that bunch, rRootage is honestly the best one, and it's free. I'd give Sentry Alpha runner-up status.
rRootage close to 1941??? Huh?

been waiting for a solid 1941 type game myself...not much to choose from tho. Hopefully someone is in the works of making one as we speak
