Trees in games

Why are trees on iPhone/iPod touch games always rubbish? It's just 2 pictures of leaves intersceting eachother! If they are going to use pictures, atleast they could put it in a tree shape.

If something online is free, you are not the customer - you are the product.

Examples?
I can only think of ATV: Offroad with it's 2D trees. But I don't really care, cos I don't spend all my time looking at the trees, lol.

A lot of it is due to the developers budget/capabilities.
Their main priority is modeling the characters, vehicles etc to a high standard, not the trees. The iPhone is perfectly capable, but I don't really see it as a problem.

A full featured 3D tree with a descent polygon count goes simply beyond the iPhones capabilities. The 3GS is a bit more powerful but in general a tree made of 2 flat planes is the best compromise between performance and visuals.

If all games had your ideal beautiful trees, they might double in file size.

Trees generally aren't my biggest concern when it comes to iPhone games. But there is one game that had some awesome looking trees: Ravensword.

But I'd rather the smaller filesize and bigger emphasis on graphics that we'd notice, and not something small like the trees.

I absolutely agree. Sometimes I refuse to play games like Ravensword because the trees are so damned ugly.

a lot of the trees in Ravensword have more than 2 polys.
Like the ones in the forest.
Obviously the more polys you have, the more the scene is going to slow down,
especially on the older phones. So you have to balance the whole thing.
