Advertising, PR & Marketing - What works?

Hey guys, we're new on the forum and looking for advice. I've been doing the PR and marketing-type duties for LeftRight Studios, but I wonder what has been most effective for you.

For our latest release, KatchUp, I sent out press releases to 50 or so sites. Used a game-centric PR wire service, and various other tools. However, the amount of coverage we got was pretty small.

So, what works best for you? Having contacts? Site banner ads? Starting with a preview by sending out pre-launch screens or videos, then trying to get review coverage?

I know what it's like having your inbox pummeled with hundreds of press releases vying for your attention. And I'm pretty sure you need at least one of the following to get picked up by a website:

- The journalist recognizes your studio name,
- the game looks incredible from the screenshots,
- your game is getting a lot of attention by forum members,
- your press release is able to charm the journalist on a personable level,
- or luck.

Of course, aiming to hit a multitude of those will be even better. Even simply contacting the website beforehand to ask if it's okay to send them the game information is a perfect example of first point of contact.
