Enemies in FPS/TPS games?

Would you guys rather have more enemies, with less detail, and easier to kill, or less enemies, with more detail, and harder to kill. Which do you prefer? Mowing down enemies? or actually being challenged taking them down?

Less enemies that are more challenging to kill.

Mowing down enemies (i.e - some zombie games) get's boring and all you really need to do is keep on shooting while panning your gun across the horde.

I prefer games where your enemies damage you quickly, take cover and generally act smart, and your accuracy is key to success in the game (i.e - getting headshots).

definitely less enemies with more detail and more challenging AI, although it can be fun to mow down helpless enemies its not as satisfying as killing challenging enemies that actually require skill and strategy to take down.

A mix would be the best option. Maybe a level filled with lots of small, easy to beat enemies, succeeded by a large boss fight. If you're only gonna go for one of the two however, less is more. It's a lot more fun to strategically take down a few large enemies.

Ok. Thanks for the input guys. I'm working on scripting enemy AI right now. Any thoughts on what types of things the enemies should do?

It would help if you told us what type of game it is.

Definitely smart and intelligent enemies that are harder to kill.

It's going to be a survival TPS.

I will assume you mean a zombie survival game, rather than having enemies with guns.

Well in that case I would recommend a game that mainly revolves around precision and accuracy of your shots. You could make it similar to Resident Evil 5 and have strong enemies and make headshots a priority. Strong AI and cover mechanics aren't going to be necessary if the enemies are zombies.

Depends what you mean by "easy to kill"
I like hordes of stupid, weak enemies that at least utilize horde tactics (I.E. surrounding you, attacking from behind, etc) but they can get boring. The same can be said about few difficult to kill enemies - they become mundane after a while, to the point where it's easy to predict what they'll do. You need to mix and match, and have varying degrees of quantity/quality.
