It means, he takes a turn and the remote player takes a turn. They might go back and forth like this for a few minutes. Then you decide that you have some other things to do, so you'd like to pick up the game at some later point; maybe a day or two later. This person wants to know if something like that is possible. This is analogous to Play By EMail (PBEM) for strategy and/or chess games.
