How do you define independent developer?

Hi, I'm working on my masters on AppStore entrepreneurship, and would need your expert advice. How do you define independent developer?

From previous posts, e.g. in this thread, I have understood that indie is somebody (an individual or a team) who is self employed in the sense that the funding doesn't come from big companies.

But what is developer? In "traditional" programming business developer refers to somebody making the code for the application, but in some of the threads in touchArcade I have felt that the meaning is somewhat larger among apps developers.

I'd really appreciate it, if some of you guys who call yourself indie devs would tell me what you think is the true meaning of the term. What kind of task does a developer take care of?

(If I'm breaking some rules here - posting in the wrong thread or so- please, be patient with me: I'm an old lady, who has no experience in hanging around game forums, or any other forums for that matter!)

Best wishes!

Masters in AppStore Entrepreneurship?

Indies are self funded, self driven and self motivated. Indies retain control of the intellectual property and distribution rights. Indies run on much smaller budgets.

There are other types of indie studios, which are not completely self funded and they may have a publisher. That is not indie in the purest sense, but they are still considered an indie studio (by culture only). In between, there are many shades of grey, so don't expect that there is a single universal answer.

Some of the largest leaps in innovation have come from small self funded studios. Many of these innovations come from "mods", which are a modification of a another more established game. These innovations are not often credited to the original source once they are embraced by the larger studios.

A 'developer' is anyone that has a hand in the production of the game. While it is often associated with programming, the programming part is only one part of the project. Usually, an indie developer is required to take on the task of several separate and individual jobs, including graphics, animation, concept, design, rigging, texturing, audio technician, music, foley artist, sampler, QA specialist, tester...

... And when the project is finished the developer often becomes the marketing/promotion department. Although in the case of the App Store, the indie should start the marketing process LONG BEFORE the app is ready to hit the store.

There is a difference between an audio/music developer and someone who simply provides audio/music. An audio/music developer actively participates in the development process, designing specific sounds and music to suit the moods of the game, with an assessment toward handling specific details. A person that simply provides music/sound is not technically a developer.

Thanks for an excellent and profound answer!

"Masters in AppStore Entrepreneurship?" (I still haven't figured out how this quoting business works!)

Well, actually I'm taking my masters in business with entrepreneurship as my major, and the theme of my theses is entrepreneurship in AppStore. So the earlier intro was kinda misleading !

I share your view of what it takes to be an indie developer. It's just so that in a theses ones one opinion doesn't count, I have to get proof elsewhere, and since I haven't come across any Journal articles that define the term, I decided to ask the ones who know!

Thanks a billion!

Sorry, I could not resist.
Luckily, Flickitty provided a more detailed answer (however not as exact as mine ).

hahaha, programmer humor at its best. I wish I would have thought of that.

I have been busy elsewhere, and am first now returning back to my study. Thanks to you, I could start the work with a smile on my face! I don't quite get the joke, but assume that there is a command that kind of resembles my question? Anyway, the mere fact that I have entered a community with a sense of humor makes it easier to continue with the study!

Have a good day!
