They could still do the free in app purchase to upgrade it to a full retina title and that would surely please everybody

What's the point of having a free in-app purchase? Why not just make it a free update?

Well the reason they're talking about it in this thread is that it's a way to work around the "20 MB over 3G limit". Instead of adding Retina Display into the game with an update, which would push it over the 3G limit, a free in-app purchase would cover it without affecting the 3G limit.

Jet Car Stunts did it with the "Lite Pack" of levels.
