I've recently gotten into arcade games, and have been playing the NES version of Donkey Kong a ton lately... and I just heard about MAME. My interest is highly piqued now, and I would definitely jailbreak again (sixth time? seventh?) for the ability to play these original arcade games (namely Donkey Kong and Nibbler, since I have no means of playing them in a cabinet).

The things stopping me from doing it right now are:

1. Is it easy to set-up? Is it difficult to know where to put the files and such?

2. Do I need to SSH to get the games?

3. Is it legal? To play and run games on this MAME product? I was never sure about emulators and ROMs and the legality of them, so is it okay to have them? Or not? That's the biggest thing holding me back. If it's illegal, I'm 100% not going to jailbreak and use this MAME program.

3. I'm pretty sure it's only slightly illegal, like jaywalking. The emulators are legal, but the games are copyrighted and are illegal to play. But this gets into EULAs and copyright law; if you buy a game, do you have a right to play it on another system, especially if the devs are out of business for 20+ years? The admins here will ban for piracy, and people talk about playing copyrighted games on MAME, so you know what the leadership here thinks.

I suppose you're right. It would make sense that it would be perfectly legal since I don't think most of these arcade machines are viably lucrative for their respective makers. Maybe secondhand stores selling the machines, but is Nintendo making any money from the several Donkey Kong arcade cabinets sprinkled around the USA? I highly doubt it...

I suppose that's a good way of looking at it, actually.

EDIT: Well I decided to break down and do it. So now I have it on my iPhone I only have Donkey Kong and Nibbler at the moment, and I might add Tron in the future, but other than that I think my collection is pretty much all I want and will want.

Bump for request on support for these. How does the Android already have cps2 support but not the iPhone?

But what if the games are released in some form either on the iPhone or another platform? That is certainly the case for a number of classics on the iPhone and seems the destiny for others. As just one example, R-Type is on the iPhone.

I have used my fair share of emus, including this one, but lets not pretend that it's legal to play, say Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man via a downloaded rom when those games are clearly still viable products and available for purchase in a number of forms, including on the iPhone. If you're talking about some obscure, terrible game, that no one would ever want to play and thus has no market value ... well ... have fun with that and don't fret it.

EDIT: I wrote "Raiden", but meant "R-Type". Fixed that. Raiden, though, those games are available on other platforms, so it's the case for them as well, really.

Yes, but see the games I got, the only ones I will get, are not available anywhere else except an arcade cabinet, and probably one that is impossible to find. Donkey Kong and Nibbler were the only ones I got, and I won't get any more unless the game I'm looking for is impossible to find or appears to have been abandoned by the publisher. In Donkey Kong's case, I found out my town doesn't actually have a working machine like I thought, so that is the only place I know of to play the game. Nibbler... well that's just impossible to find in any form.

I know where you're coming from, and that's why I've been very cautious. I never (and I mean never) use emulators/ROMs and if I'm interested in a NES or SNES game, I will pick it up on eBay or play it in some official compilation. In fact, a rule of thumb for me is that unless we're talking about impossible-to-find arcade games, I will never ever use a ROM. And for arcade games, there are just the few rare exceptions that I will download, and two of those are listed right here: Donkey Kong and Nibbler.

At first I was under the impression that I could download a ROM of a game I already own, but I found out that was complete rationalization and a myth. So I didn't go through with getting a NES emulator and getting some games on that.

If, by some miracle, Donkey Kong or Nibbler gets released outside of the arcade (their actual arcade versions, I mean), on the virtual console or something (very likely since Donkey Kong's 30th anniversary is this year, if I'm not wrong), I will erase any and all traces of the respective ROMs, and I will never touch them again. It's my duty to buy those games on the console if they're ever released, because that's the only fair thing to do.

One time I accidentally bought a bootleg copy of a movie on eBay. I felt so horrible about it being an illegitimate copy that I made a point to set aside enough money to buy two copies of it if it ever came out in the US. One to keep closed and one to use the fair way, and subsequently throw out the bootleg version. I do believe that downloading anything is a lost sale, and people who say that they were "just going to buy it after I had some time with it on the emulator" or something to that effect... I just don't think that works. I think if you buy a copy of something that you already downloaded/obtained illegally, you should buy it for sure, but then buy it one more time. I don't know.. it's always been a standpoint of mine.

Up until this MAME thing, I've never downloaded anything illegally. And trust me when I say that I will never cross that line with anything, unless it seems truly impossible to get my hands on (and no, money is not an excuse; I've held off on playing Radiant Silvergun because I've been quietly saving up for a copy from eBay, but it sounds like that waiting has paid off because it's coming to XBLA sometime this year, if I'm not wrong). Now I could just so easily download an emulator and ROM for the Saturn and Radiant Silvergun, respectively, but I have an unbreakable moral fiber that just can't cross, won't cross, and never wanted to cross any lines dealing with illegality.

For what it's worth, the MAME and stuff is off my iPhone now because I had to restore my phone and unjailbreak it, and I honestly may stop with the MAME thing. I feel that if there's no way to ever obtain it, that is one of the rare exceptions to where downloading is okay, and I feel this is one of those rare cases. I wanted to buy a Donkey Kong arcade machine, but my parents won't let me do that. That was the last domino I needed to be sure that there is absolutely no other way to obtain that game.

I already have Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Dig Dug, and several other arcade titles thanks to the App Store. In simplest terms, and to reiterate just one more time for effect, if the game appears to be commercially-viable and it's available to purchase on a console, it's not okay to download.

And just one more time: Donkey Kong and Nibbler are the only two things I've downloaded not-so-legally, and I've never intended to/don't intend to/will never intend to download anything else if I see a way to get it on a console or purchase it fairly.
