It has ads. I'm sure it'll be free for good. Unless there's a way to remove them.

I've been trying to play but it's insanely difficult.

I love the new board though, I hope they add it to the paid version of the game.

The game will only work for a while to celebrate "talk like a pirate day", there won't be a paid version.

I find that really strange (the fact that it will only work for a limited amount of time). I see no harm in leaving the game in the App Store permanently. It's actually a pretty entertaining game!

I'm just hoping that a Poker With Friends game will come out next. That would be amazing! I might send an email to Newtoy asking if/will they work on one. Is the dev on TA? If so, what is his/her's username?

I think it's just a matter of dedicating servers to a joke app.

I don't recall any specific users that said they work for Newtoy but the company has one "Newtoy Inc"

Game Impressions

This game is hilarious... and not quite as pointless as it may seem at first. Maybe they'll keep it around! Sure it uses server resources, but it also displays ads. So it should be just as profitable per-game as Words With Friends Free (which is a great game despite some downtime).

The strategy involves positioning (just like Scrabble--keep the enemy away from the TWs) as well as knowing what can be used to start/end a word and what can't. Then there's properly balancing your use of A's and R's so you don't get stuck with tiles you can't make a word out of. The fact that the ! tile is the most valuable, yet can only end a word (making it a hook), makes an interesting variation on Scrabble tactics. There are no wildcards, but long words and bingos are easy anyway if you have enough R's. So it can be a high-scoring game.

And then there's the challenge of figuring out just what is and is not a pirate word. You can't just spell anything!

So now, as a community service to pirates everywhere, I will present the Rules of Pirate Spelling as best I have figured out.

Every pirate utterance has the following structure:
  1. Optional starting consonant G or H (just one)
  2. Optional Y (either by itself or after a G/H)
  3. One required A (no more, no less)
  4. Any number of R's in a row (at least one required)
  5. Optional final G or GH
  6. Optional exclamation point (can you have two?)

So the only two-letter word is "AR," Y can only be used as the first or second (GY-, HY-) letter, and you can string together R's without limit but no other letters may be strung in a row (no AAA or GGG etc.).

Example: "HYARRRGH!"

Any corrections? Counterexamples?
