Best Shmup?

That's a loaded question if you've played any Cave games. I didn't until recently (didn't have a device that was compatible).

But now Bug Princess and Espgluda2 have blown away any of my previous favorites.

I also like Phoenix, Storm Strikers and, if you're in the mode for something retro and horizontal, R-Type.

Still not sure if they fall in the Shmup category, but Space Invaders Infinity Gene and Super Crossfire are also faves of mine.

And Act of Fury is good if you like a little twist on the genre (you are the weapon),

Off topic: is it necessary to distinguish between a bullet hell and a shmup?

On topic: Raptor: Call of the Shadows. Basically an old-school shmup with a mission based story structure and equipments.

Well, for non bullet hell...Space Invaders Infinite Genes, Tyrian and Vetica are great.
For bullet hell, Cave (with Bug Princess 2 & Deathsmiles on top for me) and Danmaku.
Super Crossfire if you count it as shmup.

For me, bullet hell games is about the bullet patterns and scoring. To me, shmup is missing the bullet patterns and scores. Don't get me wrong though..I like shmups too..its just depends on mood.

I've played most of these shooters and there's some pretty good ones among them, but one of the best IMO is missing:
Battle Squadron One.

That's on my top five best Shmups for iOS. I believe it's iPad only, not sure though.

That's why I believe recommendations should separate a BH from a shmup. Oh well.

Btw can someone provide some information/impression on Star Mercenary? It sounds and looks like an interesting game akin to Raptor from the iTunes store description.

Everything by Cave, Phoenix HD, Shogun, Danmaku Unlimited, Storm Strikers.

Bullet hell is a subgenre of shmups, not a separate genre. However if people are demanding distinctions, Dariusburst is a more traditional style side scroller while all my listed runners up (I omitted a few I really like due to age or other factors) are bullet hell.
